Played it on Saturday morning. It's nice enough, a definite resort style course. It's gone downhill a lot since its early rep as an exclusive resort - looks pretty scruffy in places now.
I disagree about a buggy - electric trolley is better. The buggies have to stick to the paths, and that's a pain in the arse on a lot of holes. There are 3 hills to climb between tees and greens, otherwise it is pretty flat.
Some very good holes are interspersed with some really ordinary stuff. Pick of the best are 2, 5, 7, 8 and a lovely finish from 16 in.
Be prepared for a snails pace round too, it took us 4hrs 10 for a 2ball - waited on every shot from 2nd tee to the 11th when finally let thru.
Check to see if event on at race track and allow plenty of time to get there if there is. Roads get chocker with traffic for that.
Old memories for me......I remember walking the land with the owner to give him an opinion if it was suitable financially for 36 holes.
I remember advising him to ensure he employed a first rate designer because of the problems the routing would give him.
He was a bit of a renegade in the area....strongly anti hunting and took the local hunts to court every time they came on his land.
There is a thin line between thrilling and slightly silly design. Castle Combe is definitely close to the line, and on either side depending on your pint of view.
Thanks for the responses. Think we will hire trolleys as hate it when buggies cannot leave the path! Thanks for the heads up re the racing circuit, luckily no event on this weekend.
I've played it a couple of times and there are a few beautiful holes. Stand out for me are the par 3 2nd, the short par 4 8th, the 12th and the 17th. Not that long off the yellows, but a nice course. I do enjoy playing there, even if it is a little on the expensive side, i.e. £65 a round (standard green fee) and £30 for a buggy.
If you are walking the hills can become a bit tiresome, especially the last from the 17th to the 18th, but it is a pain with the buggies that you are forced to stick to the paths, which I think actually slows the round down.
As another person said, the round can be very slow. Took us near 4.5 hours for a 2 ball as we got held up behind a society of 3 four-balls. Just go out and enjoy the scenery though.
