Anyone really looked into this ?

His Web Site is a bit techy but is informative.

I've just had a brief look at his findings, no wonder the games hard, my best iron set came out just over 500 MPF

Maybe it is time to look at something like Ping ;)

RG Dave loves this stuff.

I had a look a few nights ago, amazing how Taylor Made compare.

Good man HTL!

I have all the charts downloaded on my laptop and am signed up at the forum.

I asked a question on the forum regarding using high MPF clubs.

http://www.ralphmaltby.com/forum/topic/1431?page=2

I then tried to find (new or used) a set of ultra forgiving Maltby designed clubs and came up blank more or less.
I found a company (through ebay) that had two sets of KE-4 irons but they were hopeless. I asked some simple questions that they couldn't answer....like "are the shafts steel or graphite? regular or stiff or whatever"....

In the end, I just went a blew £200 on a set of used X-18s to see if I could get on with them.

So how did you get on with them?

I often wonder if the look of a chunky cast head would play on my mind/confidence and cancel out the undoubted extra forgivness on miss hits.

So what are we saying in laymens term. The higher the rating the easier the playability. In which case I nthin the index is flawed as I'd say the TM TP's are on a par with a lot of clubs aimed at mid-handicappers and if I can get them to ocassionally behave then they must be easy

Good. So much so, I've re-gripped them and have no plans to change back. I've played with similar MPF clubs over the years....in fact my favourite ever set (now re-shafted and lent to a junior) were designed by Ralph Maltby.
Ignoring my early stages cavity irons (Mizuno Astron etc.) all my clubs have been in the 600-800 MPF range. I then bought a set of Mizunos that barely get over 500. They are classy irons with wide soles on the mid-irons but not particularly forgiving.
The X-18s are almost at the top of the charts (ignoring fusion/hybrid sets and crazy-design stuff).
The good and bad shots haven't changed over the years, but the consistency of strike and distance is noticeably improved with the Callaways.

HOWEVER, 3 things to consider.
1) if you swing it fast...the ball will probably go too high for most people.
2) if you tend to hook the ball, the offset is not exactly going to appeal
3) if you "middle" the ball most times, it makes next to no difference what club you pay with.

I have some extra-small rubber tees (from Gamola) to use at the range. My Callaways now have white rubber debris all over the sole in the middle of the face. On the days I repeat this on the course, I could play with Callaways or perhaps even a real golf club! :)

The ball tends to do straight only.....which for me, is a good trade off.

My old MacGregor 1025M blades/musclebacks were classified as game improvers. This always made me laugh. Game improving blades. What will they think of next.

My ZBs are rated about 500, which is fine for me.

I'm not so stupid as to believe I'm a great ball striker and I'm fast realising that no matter how many good shots I play a round it's the ones that smell a bit that actually matter most to my score.

I have not come across this MPF stuff before. I may have to get over my touch of golf snobbery and try a ultra game improver iron. See if it makes a difference to my scores .

I'm sure I could blag a demo set from the club pro.

Yes....not bad. Even I could probably hit them. :)

Yours are about 9 down from my "old" MX-900s.

Maybe I should try some. :o

Hey Dave any chance you might be able to tell me what score my Cobra S2's got with Maltby... when i try to download the 2010 chart it stops halfway and i can never get the full lot down..........It seems to hang....

My i15's are way up there, in the 700's if I remember correctly.

Why the feck can't I hit 'em then?

:D :D :D :D :D

OMG Rob, you're TOO OLD for pings!!! :D
Try and get hold of some motorised clubs fella, you might start to enjoy the game.

Cobra S2 = 677 mpf.

Identical (coincidentally) to Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot (original) 1988.

1988? - That's years ago....I played with them for years, brilliant club. 677 mpf got me down from 24 to 8. When I started again, I bought some MacGregor 565.....670 mpf.

S2's are 677 Kid.

My MP-58's are only 388

TM R9's are a whopping 97!! But the R9TP's are 218?

Something doesn't fit right here.

By "playability" is Maltby meaning how easy they are to use? Therefore GI clubs like G15 will have a higher value than, say, S57's?
If so then they must have the figures wrong on the R9's.
