R&A secretary Peter Dawson states that male only golf clubs are acting within the law and do not need to change.

I would have been more impressed if he has said male and female clubs don't need to change.

Probably because the female only clubs are few in number and not particularly high profile. This issue raises its head whenever the Open is staged at a male only members club. It's probably safe to assume that the bulk of the moaning about it is from non-golfers.

Peter Dawson estimates that there are as many female only clubs as there are male only, my guess is the male only get reported more as (at least) 4 of them are on the Open rota and are within the GMTop100 (and other) top 10.

He also said he thought that he probably won't be asked the same question in 10-15 years time because these courses will have changed their policies.

I'd love to see evidence of that to be honest; I can think of two male only clubs fairly close to me but no female only clubs off the top of my head.

I don't have any issue whatsoever with single sex golf clubs. They are private clubs, they can do whatever they choose.

PD listed Troon, St Andrews and the two you've mentioned

Not sure I agree with that as St Andrews is a public COURSE with numerous clubs (including ladies only ones) attached to it. Troon certainly has ladies tees so they are allowed to play the course, not sure about membership though.

I think this is where people get confused. St Andrews itself is a golf course and women can play it. It just happens to be the Home of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew's, which is male only.

Personally, I don't see what the fuss is about. Private clubs should be able to admit who they want. It's worked for the WI for long enough.

Royal Troon is all male.
They arranged a planning meeting for the last Open and our Council sent a female senior officer. They really got their knockerbockers in a twist over that one. They wanted leave to temporally close a public right of way and she was the one who would grant the permission. I think she was quietly ushered into the Secs office and offered whisky.

For those who do not know The R&A are not a course owning club.
The other male only course owning clubs on the Open rota allow females to play.

This makes perfect sense.... but just sounds soooooo wrong.

That said I'm sure there are a lot of women who wouldn't want me in their 'ladies only' aerobics class :p

A storm in a tea cup if you ask me, golf is pretty open compared to most sports. What about female only gyms? don't hear any complaints about that much.
Personally I find all male member clubs snobby and not worth my hard earned, I'd rather have a more relaxed atmosphere.

Totally agree. Storm in a teacup that regularly gets an airing...
