So there was a major competition at my club this weekend which was cancelled due to the weather and the course was 'unplayable'. The same happened for one of the majors last season.

On both occasions the course remained open for anyone who wanted to play. It is however my understanding that for the competition to be cancelled the course has to be unplayable and would therefore close. Or am I wrong in my thinking?

This time it suits me as I couldn't play this week however last season I went out and had a great round and lost out on handicap cut and a possible win.

We've had similar twice this year the course remained open but comp cancelled as it was playable under quailfying conditions. It's up to comp comittee wether to play comp and head Greenkeeper to close course there opinions may differ probably due to casual water or the odd flooded bunker.

We had our big low handicap open off the Blues on Sat, it was hosing it down all morning with a very strong easterly. Was talk of cancelling it as loads just didn;t got out. CSS was up at 77 when my High score went it which was far from the worst with guys much lower than me struggling.

Weather cleared up in the afternoon with about 20 guys playing in flat calm and sunshine. all had decent scores and the CSS went down.:(

Similar here, I shot 78 (two over handicap) in truly horrendous conditions in the morning which was actually a pretty decent score in the circumstances. It dried up, sun came out, and the afternoon lot played in perfect conditions with the course softened up as an added bonus.... Some really good scoring in the afternoon.... :(

At points I think the committee can give in to pressure from the early morning groups who are not wanting to play in a bit of rain. By all accounts the weather wasn't great in the morning and there was some water lying. A lot of people chose not to go out and that put more pressure down.

Think of it the other way though, if it was calm and nice in the morning and turned around 1pm/2pm with rain and wind etc would the medal be cancelled? I suspect not.

It is hard lines for those who do go out in the morning to make the best of it, I feel your pain having had it happen to me where the day turns and there's perfect conditions for the later groups!
