I thought I was immune.I often cackled at the droolers Oddsocks, Aztecs and Alex1975 I'm looking at you! I mocked Homer for trying every new club that came out at a time when he was perfectly happy with what he already had. I smiled smugly at posts by Imurg and Smiffy as they went out and bought some glistening new sticks when their current set up was still relatively new...

...but despite my determination not to succumb, I've been seduced by the power of the dark side. I am now irrationally chomping at the bit to replace my wedges. Thankfully (to avoid a snap decision), I have to wait until I get some Xmas money from the Mrs and hopefully win some pro shop credit/swindle cash between now and February to soften the blow.

But I look at my bag and my poor skymarked 3 Wood (my swing was much too steep for far too long :( ), the huge chunk I took out of the sole of my beloved 6 iron (a nasty stone lying buried in the rough) and my absolutely battered wedges and I want to cry. None of it's new anymore :(

So Valentines Day cannot come soon enough as I expect it is around then that I'll be investing in some beautiful new SM4s...but for now this is a confession...

My name is Tiger, I am 32 and I am a golfing magpie...

Who's next to confess?

 How rude! :D

I just like looking at nice things ;) I don't (can't) go out and buy stuff willy-nilly.

I'm all talk really. As much as I'd like a set of MP-59's it wouldn't be worth me investing with my swing in it's current state. Get me this side of next season and I'll start thinking about it (unless something magical happens between now and then!) as I've got far too much to pay out for next year already (7 weddings and 4 stag weekends to attend being the main culprits!) :(

Going the same route with the SM4s but in my defence the grooves on my lob wegde have seen better days. Just deciding which ones to order.

Wouldn't class myself as a golfing magpie just yet Tiger but I'm never too far away.

I have never laughed so much in all my life as i did when i read your poor attempt at justifying your future purchases. You fanny! Id have more respect if you said " ive looked at my bag and decided i want new shiney's "

every club will get marked, try getting a set of satin black mpt10 wedges for christmas and after one round the black coating has fallen off and your wedges look a season old, that enough to drive any mans credit card through the roof...

It's the grooves, it's the grooves, honest guv it's the grooves!!!!:D

In my defence it's only the wedges that I am changing right now, mainly due to expense. It is upsetting though when you look down on your 3 wood and it is showing battle scars from your early inept efforts!!!

in all fairness tiger, your carrying a well spec'd bag for a 28 hc player. as your swing changes and matures battle scares will appear. i wouldn't rush to change a 3wood just because of a sky mark. I can remember as a kid i purchased some vantage eliminators (cally big berther copies) from the guy i used to caddy for.

6 rounds old, the driver 3 & 5 were mint, and unmarked and totally like new. first round out and i put a big sky mark in the 3wood plying from the first cut on our 4th par 5. it didnt effect the performance of the club in the slightest, but i learned a valuable lesson that day. the clubs were purchased around 96 and have been through 3 sets of friends up to now, that same sky mark scares them too.

With a mortgage and pending divorce to pay for I wish I could look at some nice new shiny kit. I am still swinging my TM RAC LT2 irons Rescue dual 2 & 3 and RAC TP chrome 54 and 60 wedge that I purchased 6 years ago. Newest thing I have to swing is the R9 that I bought when it first came out........:(

I am definitely not a golf magpie. My 10 year old irons are testament to this!

In addition, I have never, ever bought a new golf club that wasn't a putter. Always second hand for me as last years greatest thing ever is always good enough for my golf game.

I can't quite understand why people change their stuff so much either. I only change if it is going to definitely make a difference or I have simply fallen out with an existing club. That said, I am not knocking anyone who keeps buying kit. Whatever floats your boat!

Everyone knows that good golf isn't about the gear though, don't they?

Cheers,

Snelly

You feel sleepy. You NEED these new shineys go shopping
Brilliant!!!!! Oddsocks worry not I'm not planning on buying a new 3 wood because of teh skymark :) Just getting the wedges. Snelly rest assured the irons are here to stay for the long term. The putter's not going anywhere either!!! But those wedges.........PS Did I mention I really like the wedges?

What is your actual reason for buying wedges again?

What is your actual reason for buying wedges again?
:) There are a few genuine reasons:
- my short game is getting better (perseverance with Pelz has paid off)
- the shafts (PX5.5) in my current wedges feel pretty unresponsive around the greens compared to others I've tried (DG Wedge flex)
- I've had my current wedges for 2.5 years and the grooves especially on the GW are getting a bit worn

I had been thinking about buying some and then I won £62 to spend in my pro shop. He doesn't stock the balls I play and I though I'd put the money towards some wedges. The Titleist Tour opportunity write up and photos tipped me over the edge!

And I might be a 28 handicapper, but I'm probably the best 28 handicapper in the world! ;)

no worries, i was just interested to see if you were in fact a true golf magpie.

The answer is yes, because you have even come up with a fully believable reason as to why you NEED these wedges. lol

I had a 6 year old vokey 52* which was awesome , the only reason i shifted it was because there was such a difference between than and my 60* TPZ. shaft length, shaft flex and head weight all differed which gave far from consistent results, had they been a matched set such as yours, 6 years old or not there would not have moved from my bag.

Ssssshhh! The wife might hear me reading this - yes I still read out loud.

My list for the January sales is two Vokey's, a 910 3&5 wood, a 910 hybrid and some FJ Contours. But I haven't looked at any Cobra S3 pro's or Titliest MB irons... honest I haven't.

Sssshhhhh, she coming back out of the kitchen.
