Madeira

Joke of a tournament. Always a rubbish field, was reduced to 36 holes last year, got canned once this year, and now been scheduled the week of a rally event. Bin it.

Very harsh !

Last year it was a dual event due to most playing over in the U.S. that week and it was unfortunate that the weather this year hit

Far too many events have been "binned" in recent years.

It's a glorified Challenge Tour event. Fair enough if it stayed on the Challenge Tour, but shouldn't be a European Tour event.

Does it matter which tour it's labelled against

It's not the organisers fault many are deciding to pick resting for the WGC

It's giving a lot of players a chance to further their career and gives them a chance to earn a tour card.

Not really Phil, was it march the Eu tour was their? The month that a little atlantic ocean island historically has some of its worst weather? bad planning if you ask me. As for the Rally next to the tee, that was just silly.

These smaller events have to fit in around all the bigger events mate and have to squeeze themselves into the gaps of the established comps

It's hard enough for the guys on the lower tours such as challenge tour/europro tour to get on the european tour . This event gives a great chance to a lot of guys who are very good players . Why bin it ? Very harsh indeed.

why not play it at a time of year where the conditions on the island are better for golf?

Because the calendar is prob already filled for those times by the other major events

If it's a small time event to give the Challenge guys a go on a smaller European Tour event, and they're insistent on having it in Madeira. Why not have it the same week as one of the American tournaments? Like the US Open for example. They externally score the majors anyway, so wouldn't be an issue there, and surely the weather in June is better than in March!

Right, so why host an event in Madeira, when there are other countries with better climates at that time of year? Do you see my point phil or am i wasting my time?

Are those other countries willing to hold an event at that time ?

Ok - the tour schedule is a very tight schedule with no free weeks - events happen when there are U.S. Events and they get filled by members of the Challenge Tour and it helps those players come through

The slots throughout the year are prime slots through certain times of the year - those slots will cost events lots of money , the two events before the Open are two of the biggest prime slots for example on the ET

Madeira Open organiser will be on limited budgets and because they will never attract the top players have to work within those budgets and get whatever slot is viable for them. That means getting those slots the week before or after a major event in the U.S.

We are losing golf tournaments to the Far East as it is and now some want another just to be binned ?! And replaced by what exactly ?

Do i look like a european tour planner? pretty sure they could find somewhere..

That's the problem - it is a struggle to find places that can afford to host events - it's exactly what happened to events like the Andalucia Open - couldn't afford to host a ET event anymore.

So lets just fill the schedule with whatever crap we can get then yeh??

Or just have no events at all instead ?

It's being filled by courses that are willing to host and pay for the events

We can ask them not too but then give a reason to the pros that are trying to earn a living

When you think that there is a 2 year exemption to the European Tour at stake, I do wonder what value this event has ever added to the Tour.
It has never boasted a decent field, never attracts anyone of any standing and yet the winner gets to play on tour for the next 2 years - all for winning an event that is barely more significant than a Challenge Tour event.
