Machynys was the first (might still be the only) Jack Nicklaus built course in Wales, built on some very low ground right next to the coast.

What you get is a very plush modern club with a great clubhouse, Spa facility, great range but all in a very relaxed atmosphere.

The course is supposed to be “links like” however because of the low lying land it was built on it is always soft underfoot so never plays like a bump & run track. The greens are what you would find at any American style course, big, receptive and undulating. They are excellent surfaces and generally pretty quick too.

It’s difficult to pick out holes to describe for a review. They are all “nice” holes, well planned both visually and from a playing point of view. You just don’t finish your round and think “wow 13 was a great hole” or “hole 6 was pretty special”.

Of the two nines, 10 – 18 is more challenging and visually more appealing (Front 9 gives constant views of the ever looming local steel works!!). There are some elevation changes (small) on the back 9 and the holes run up to the Nicklaus village which was purpose built with “luxury” houses, yours for a snip at £600K+ if you want a wooden house battered by the cold winds in off the coast!!

Like any course at the coast, it’s nature changes with he conditions. Flat calm and this is a course ripe to be beaten up for fun. Once the wind blows, constructing a score becomes a real scramble.

Standout holes? Par 3 11th, played across the corner of a large pond onto a green cut into a bank to the right, between an 8iron and 3wood depending on that breeze. Stroke 2 16th hole is well deserving of the difficulty rating. A long carry across another pond to a bunker strewn fairway before playing all uphill to a green which is perched up at the highest point on the course. Even @ 410 off the yellow tees (450 back to the medals) this requires two very healthy blows to get up and on to the surface.

I like Machynys, the clubhouse and general feel around the place is great. The course is a very enjoyable test, stick this course in England on the coast and it will set you back around £100 to play, you can get a round here in Sth Wales for less than £20 during the winter!!! Worth it just to putt on the tees, they are immaculate and must run at about 10 on the stimp!!!

Good review Robobum - I played it right after opening and really liked it - I thought back 9 was a step up from front 9 - my one criticism is that the tees are not the right length - from memory 7,000 ish off the back, which had some big carries, next tees about 6,100 - and a lot of these were forward menaing we only played about 5,800 - it could do with a 6,00-6,600 set up.

I also agree it is a good and fair review.
Played it 3 times;twice calm;once,a month ago, in a howling gale with rain. The 7 handicapers were taking a 3 wood to the par3 16th you mention!
