Anyone got these or heard any reviews, seem to be at least 1/2 normal price companies are charging for them, so wondered if they were worth a punt for a spare set ?

Firstly, buyer beware... If they seem like a steal or are ridiculously cheap, alarm bells ding, ding ding!

Can't comment on the brand itself so I don't know where these clubs would compare against the bigger mainstream brands but I'd imagine you could pick up a lightly used second hand set of Callaways or pings for similar or slightly more money. Personally I'd probably go for the more mainstream brand if I'm honest, a set of callaway x22s you can pick up pretty cheap for around 200notes...

I guess you weren't around when MacGregor were THE brand for clubs!

Sadly budget brand only now!

I doubt that there will be much wrong with the Macgregors for most golfers

There's a host of brands sitting under those with the biggest marketing/sponsorship budgets and it sometimes lets us buy a bit of a similar quality at a more realistic price (maybe because the consumer isn't paying millions to pro's or for the ads in GM :D )

I watched my Nicklaus iron set online for nearly 18 months get gradually cheaper & cheaper until i picked them up for a freakin steal 3 months ago, turns out a chap called Clay Long played a big part in their design & development and a google of him tells us that he's no ones mug (he's also worked for Macgregor in the past)

Shame when these old brands fall away. I used to have a set of these, and they were such lovely clubs

On a side note, it's nice to see Hogan making a comeback, another great brand when it comes to traditional irons.

I had a 'full' set of VIP Blades for a while. The shafts were too stiff and the long irons a bit tough to hit, but I really regret selling the matching wedges!

Indeed, great to see the Hogan name re-emerging. I hope Hogan don't screw around with it, but keep it as a 'boutique' brand that has a bit of something special about it. The recent 'loft only' irons is the sort of thing that will separate it from mainstream products, but will appeal to quite a few!

still have the VIP combo set (with regular shafts) in my travel bag. very good, great looking clubs and the cavities 6 to 3 are good on off-center hits, too

My first woods (Dad's) hand me downs were lovely MacGregor Golden Bear persimmons. They has an amber Golden Bear on the sweet spot...the electricall tape holding together the hosel ruined the look haha

Will be using these over the summer. Probably the best feeling clubs I've ever used.

Back in the day they were the aspirational brand. Didn't Nicklaus use them for a long time?

I think he won all 18 of his majors with MacGregors. Used more recently by Darren Clarke, Jose Maria Olazabal and Greg Norman. Shame the brand is no longer what it was. Some of their old blades from the 50's and 60's are works of art.

Ah right sorry it's all new to me, just looking at a new set of budget ironsirons, I know the usual advice is go for secondhand but just scouring to see if there are any good "as new" sets I see they're massively reduced but that's just trick advertising I assume. I'm looking at a set of Wilson ci11's or di11's but I'm not a massive fan of standing over a club with a massive head which the super game improvement irons give (although I could certainly do with the help it just doesn't feel right)

I know what you mean about "big heads" and confidence over the ball is important but it simply comes down to what is right for your swing. Plenty of places (pro shops, driving ranges, even high street golf stores) usually have 2nd hand sets in you can try first
