In essence imagine you have sat the village idiot down and had to describe the difference in the two to him  hypothetically.
what would you say. They could google it but would be lost with technical jargon.

A pal of mine  said stop fannying around for a laptop and tell yer mate to go for a Mac book. Only me other mate didn't know there was two sorts :mmm: so what do I tell me other mate.

thanks for helping me. Mate that is 😁

Air thinner with poorer spec than Pro.

Fragger et al can talk about prices all they want, but my MacBook Pro has been the best purchase of my life. Unbelievably reliable.

depends what the main kinda use of it is - just mostly recreational or more heavy duty stuff if say a camera guy, or music, or work docs etc

currently there's the biggest line up of differing mac laps on the market 6 in all

but you can discount the 15" version as that's about to get makeover update soon

would say you can also discount the new macbook as that has gone down the direction of new usb interface so limited in connections if you have older apple peripherals to connect you into buying more leads

so that leaves either the 13" air or 13" macbook pro or if flush the 13" macbook retina pro

the new macbook pro's are real lightweight so not much different anymore to the air if carrying it about

if you can afford it spec up a macbook pro but if you not going to use it for much more than email, surfing etc basic spec macbook pro would be fine - cheaper still the 13" air if use is goin to be pretty basic

currently the best is the 13" retina macbook pro

My Mac Book Pro is 7 years old and still going strong. Still use it as my working from home laptop, much better than my newer but far inferior windows laptop IMO.

MacBook Air user here, no disk drive and smaller hard drive and smaller ram. That's about it in basics however, it boots up in under 10 secs and is extremely reliable. Wouldn't go back to Windows now.

This.

Disk space and all that jazz is not as important as on a Windows based laptop as the apple OS's are more efficient. Took me a while to get my head round as historically it was all about storage, ram, but my air is Tom Kite off a digging implement and I use t'cloud for any storage.

Like coach says, unless you are hard core, don't bother wasting your money on a Pro.

In 2011 I picked the MBA because of it's light weight. The current generation of the MBP weights in at roughly the same as the MBA back then. I am tempted to upgrade. While the MBA does everything a normal person needs I like my photography, and the MBP will be better at that.

I've got 2013 Macbook Air and Macbook Pro - the Air is much lighter and boots up much quicker as it has an SSD drive - I edit video on both of them which is pretty hard on the processor and both handle it no problem - if anything I prefer the Air.

I'll replace one of them next summer - not sure whether I get another Air or Pro then though, but whichever it is it will have an SSD drive.

Macbook Pro user.

Never had an Air to compare against but agree with the others, a fantastic purchase and will outlive three Windows laptops easily.

I've had (and still have) a 13 inch MBP from about 3 years ago. Still going strong...Before that I had a 1st Gen Macbook which lasted 8 years and would still be going strong had it not been for the wife getting a bit heavy-handed with the screen.

Work were generous enough to buy me a "work laptop" - I was looking at decent windows based ones then they came in and said "you should just buy a macbook, it'll look more professional when you're out doing training"...I'm not one to disagree with the boss.

Picked up my shiny new 13 inch MBP yesterday and it's chuffing awesome. Light, small and does everything I need it to do. Sure it's not cheap, but as I'm not footing the bill, I'm not too fussed! This is the first one I've had with Retina Display and it's amazing how much you can tell the difference.

I got an Air 12 months ago and never looked back , teamed it up with a drive on my home network and that sorted the storage issues for photos and stuff , the speed is brilliant from the start up ,,,,, actually i have looked back but only to smile when friends windows based stuff freezes, locks up and generallly acts up :smirk:

New Macbook Pro's don't have a disk drive either.

I've had my Macbook Pro for about 3 years, and only replaced my old one (which I had for 5 years) because I spilt a drink on it and completely ruined it (was gutted). Would never buy another Windows machine. Hate having to use a Windows machine at Work!

I would say if your mate is not savvy enough to get the difference by googling them and has histrionically used a windows based computer. dont buy a mac. I wouldn't dream of letting my dad touch a mac, he wouldnt have a clue. I personally cant stand them, i have been institutionalized by Microsoft.

Your dad would be fine - Macs are Fisher Price computers - easy to learn, easy too use

You can, you just don't want to learn. You can learn the ins and outs of mac within hours of using it.

Thats probably true. I did have a minor melt down with windows 8 when i couldn't find the home button! Swift download of classic shell sorted that out! I don't like change!
