Over the past few weeks I have been looking into getting fibreoptic broadband. The only company that could offer me anything that compared with BT was BT!
After several phone calls a package I was less than disgusted with was knocked out and BT told me to get a MAC code from O2, who is currently my BB supplier. When I got put through I found out the O2 takeover by Sky had been completed and I was officially a Sky customer so I explained I wanted the MAC code to go to BT.
The guy asked if he could find me a package from them that was better and I let him. The first offer was exactly the same as BTs and I started umming and erring. He then added a £40 credit to the account to pay for the first month and a bit. So I ummed and erred a little more to see if he would throw anything else in and he asked me why I left Sky before so I explained it all to him and he understood why I had become disillusioned with Sky. So he then threw in 12 month Sky tv package all bar sports and movies.
This was the clincher really, OK I might not have paid out for Sky TV but in total it's a package that betters BTs by nearly £500! Installation will be over a week sooner than with BT and Sky TV will be installed next Tuesday.

but you wanted fibre optic broadband

I just moved from sky to cable and the BB is astounding.........HD is thrown in where SKY charge £120pa on top

I am currently on an exchange which has no prospects of fibre anytime soon. I get 5Meg but the exchange is configured for Sky LLU, which promises around 12Meg, and the overall price is very attractive.

One small complication is that I use an Apple Time Capsule as router and backup device, and I don't intend to replace it. if the Sky Hub adds in without mucking up my network, fine.

Any views on Sky LLU?

Sky LLU is fairly stable, most areas now have moved from DSLAM kit to ISAM which makes configuration of the line easier and more effective. Like many ISPs Sky use a form of Dynamic Line Management to analyse and adjust the line as required based on the three main performance stats.
For the most part, speeds tend to be within 10% of the estimate (not an actual science by any means) and the 12mbps estimate will be based on the provided LL line length and condition of the line being above average. So maybe plan for 9-10mbps as the actual sync speed to avoid disappointment.
Throughput and bandwidth are advertised as unshaped and unlimited respectively although sometimes the line stats tell a different story (but difficult to prove that it's not being affected by something external). For the most part though you will get no form of shaping within the FUP.

The infrastructure that Sky built from was originally owned by Easynet which had a good rating by CCT, they then added O2 network infrastructure to this late last year plus expanded independantly via the BT network spine.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. that is very helpful.

Is that standard cable broadband or fibre optic, currently with virgin cable but can get a deal
With sky for the complete package inc sports for the same fee, but HID works from home a fair bit and is concerned about broadband speeds.

It is fibre BB as much as I can get it here. We have a CAB by the existing CAB that has fibreoptic to it giving me up to 14 Mb where as I'm only getting around 1.5 at the moment.
