Said it before and will say it again, a large part of what they sell is sex appeal, FACT. Just look at how they dress.

This poll is "wrong" imo, but it's just an example of what the LPGA tour is.

Just opened the LPGA website and looked at the three pictures they used in the banner. Does not look like they are trying to sell sex appeal to me.

Im not saying this is right, it certainly isnt, but if this weekends tournament and coverage was anything to go by they need to do something different!

Funereal pace of play, Christie Kerr being told by her caddie just to wait (when windy) when she had been stood over a shot for several minutes already and then go right back to the start of a hideously long routine, taking over 5 minutes to take a drop from some cables and make a simple putt from the back of the green etc. A play off to the same hole 6 times (with a really badly positioned hole which made 4 really tough and 5 really easy).

Sky tried hard to give it main billing over the mens pairs event but clearly lost interest as the play off dragged on and on and started to show more and more of the mens event that by the time the winning approach was hit sky werent showing it live!

Its different/original. It might work or fall on its face but there’s no real harm in giving it a go

Image, appearance & social media play a large part in mainstream sports and sports entertainment across both men and women’s sports these days, from Paige whatshername to Big Fat Goalie in the fa cup. It’s definitely a viable marketing opportunity but no idea whether it’ll be successful

I suspect sponsors normally invite (or pay) someone to play in the hope they will get some exposure and say nice things about them

Is it better/worse or just different marketing to a sponsor paying a Tiger/Rory type player a 7 figure sum to play (usually paid to players who qualified by right anyway but were not going to attend without getting his wad)

No other player is missing out here

Comparing oranges and apples imo.

Players enticed to the tournament that can actually compete and show the sport in a good light is totally different to someone being there just to look at. If a sport wants to be taken seriously it shouldnt pander. And lets be honest, the one who gets the most votes won't be the one with the most teen girls fan (apparent target audience if looking to inspire).

Both fruits, both grow on trees, both have seeds inside, both used in alcoholic drinks.... pretty similar methinks :D

Most weeks of the year the unpaid sponsor invites rarely feature anyway (the odd exception happens every so often) Why shouldn't this weeks feel good story be about Carly Booth leading after day one? or the Blair lass getting a hole in one

Like most marketing campaigns its a wee gamble but if the above examples happened then... kerching!

How should sponsors use up their invites after the obligatory good non-qualified player, paid for superstar?

Invite the local pro?

A few more amateurs?

They probably have as much chance at an event as any of the instagram girls.

I have no issue with a sponsor wanting to do invites for commercial reasons. But don't think it needs supporting my the tour itself. Imo, this isnt a feel good story. The winner will be there for no golfing reasons whatsoever.

At least a big name player may inspire a youngster to golf. These girls legacy is what? As long as you're pretty you will have things handed to you?

Certainly not a morale i'd want my kids to aspire or wish to live by.

No way would I suggest to anyone that they hold this up to their kids as an example of a moral to live by/aspire to... neither would I deny to them that yes, right or wrong, quite often pretty people do get things handed to them. I really cant see that changing... ever

edit: i though the local pro would typically get an invite anyway, certainly seen it on the ET

Oh I wouldn't suggest its a rare occurrence, I'd just rather use examples of successful women irrespective of their profile pic.

I'd be interested what the woman who is one place below the qualifying criteria thinks about it all.

Probably that they shouldn't have missed that 2-footer last time out :D

Interesting that Paige Spiranac declined to take part in this sponsor initiative

I'm not sure this is relevant, every event, male and female, the sponsors are given a number of invites for their choosing, in theory every event has a person one place below the qualifying criteria.

As much as we may not agree with what they're doing it's obviously working. How many of us would of been aware of this particular event on the tour.

If it is the actual reason and not just a sound bite then the last paragraph from the link sums it up for me.

"For the naysayers, if we get 10 million new eyeballs exposed to our event, that’s not only good for the winner of our contest, but for the 143 other players in the field,” Erensen said. “We need to get new people interested in the game, and if it takes out-of-the-box thinking like this, we are happy to do our part.”

It's clear that the poll has had the desired effect, as we are talking about a tournament that we wouldn't normally talk about. And it has highlighted women's golf for another week. Nothing wrong with them trying something different to get people interested in the woman's game.

Tbf we're talking about it on a golf forum. I'd be surprised if even one person I know who's not into golf mentions it. Add to that, I'd estimate that less than 1% of us will watch said tournament.

To grow the game they need a new audience to be inspired. Middle aged men choosing who they'd kick out of bed last won't help that. No matter how many of us were to tune in.

Im all for new ideas. But they'd be better of opening it to anyone with a handicap to enter. Buy making it a poll it's purely gonna be based on their looks. Which isn't growing the game at all.
