Following on from a thread I have read on a USA forum.
What would you consider a low / med / high handicap. There are some real strange views on the other forum like +-2 Low
2-5 Med
6+ High
Thats pretty harsh in my view, but then it is an american forum.

I would classify handicaps as below

+ - 9 low
10-18 Med
Anyone with more than a shot a hole = high

Whats your views?

The average handicap is about 17 I believe. I would have to agree with your classification. Those other lads are being wishful if 6 is a high handicap.

There is still a massive difference between a 18 and 10 handicap player though, I know that they are lumped into the same catagorie but skill wise the gap is still large. as is the gap between zero and 7/8. I'd rather see a different system than the low, medium, high handicap catagorie we currently use. I know that the system is there so we can all compete fairly but a 10 handicap player trying to beat an 18 will have his work cut out usually.

I would say Cat 1 up to 5, is low, and above 15 is high.

Remember that in the US, handicaps tend to be lower, perhaps by 2 shots. A typical UK X handicapper should win 7 out of 10 matches against a typical US X handicapper.

Would you then want to make it virtually certain that the 10 handicapper should beat the 18 handicapper?

I'd go along with the divisions for competitions:
Div 1: upto 12 - low
Div 2: 13-18 - medium
Div 3: 19 + - high

Think I will go with Gil on this one. My cousin was a pro for 30yrs, until ill heath got the better of him. He always said 10 was a good mans handicap, and 12 was a good womans h/c. This is for those that only get out once a week or so.

What he said, although I'd be inclined to go with 18+ as high.

Well, let's put it this way - I play off 22 at the moment and I'm expecting a cut to 19 or 20 over the season.

I consider myself a high handicapper now and if I get to 19, I'll still consider myself a high handicapper!

Surely if you are breaking handicapping into 3 divisions (low, med and high) it would be sensible to break the numbers into thirds too. Maximum handicap for a male golfer is 28 so low is 1-9, medium is 10-18 and high is 19-28. Simples!

The difference being tho Matty the 4 shot difference , while the same numericaly is very different Ability wise in say a 5 to 9 handicap & 9 to 13 handicap .. both only 4 shots but massive difference very little between the 9-13 but miles between 5-9.. .. id see 5 as a low handicapper , but thats just a personal opinion ..
