For the first 2.5 years of playing golf I never practiced my putting at all. I'd hit balls 10 minutes before teeing off but that was it.
In fact add chipping, pitching and bunkers to the list of things that would typically go untouched.
Earlier this year I watched a short game video from David Ledbetter which focussed on the family of four; putting, chipping, pitching, sand play. It is excellent and I would recommend it to everyone - you can find it on YouTube (David Ledbetter Golf The Short Game). Since then my practice has become much more targetted, more fun and I have seen much better results.
I now belive that I can sink long putts (as long as they don't have ridiculous breaks) as well as avoid three putting throughout the round (in the last 6 rounds I have played I have only had 2 three putts). It has positively impacted my ability to get up and down as well as massively taking the pressure off my long game.
I could not recommend more the virtue of spending the time to learn how to hit the short shots in golf.
