Love him or hate him - does golf need Tiger Woods?

Would you be interested in regional qualifiers, then a National FInal?

I dont love Tiger, nor hate him, to me, he is barable(see other 2 posts :D ) but I do think he is definitly not NEEDED by golf.

There where some great tournaments contested in his abscence.

Rubbish Rubbish Rubbish Taxi for ToniN you seem to have drunk to much and are starting to babble rubbish

I think that what golf needs is someone to step up and compete with Tiger on a regular basis. Great eras in sport are made when there are 2 or 3 people at the top of their game battling it out week in week out. Look at the great eras in tennis, F1, football, rugby in fact almost any sport and they are made by there being 2 or 3 true greats at any one time. Compare that with the likes of the Schumaker era in F1, became boring because one person was so far ahead of the others.

I'm in the don't particularly like him corner, but I wouldn't go as far as hate.

But, at the moment golf, especially American golf, needs him more than ever before.

Our modern media led world needs 'heroes'. The vast majority of the Masters leaderboard was full of Yanks. And apart from PW I wouldn't miss any one of them if they gave up tomorrow.

He's driven, probably too much, and he lets it show. But he can play a bit too, btw.

For me, the best couple of hours of the Masters was Tiger and Phil going at it.

But Phil isn't a strong enough personality to carry the game on his own.

Tiger is.

freddie, you need to calm down fella. People are entitled to their own opinions, they may differ from yours but they are entitled to them. This is the 2nd thread where you're getting a bit personal in your replies to people and if you're not careful you're going to start a flame war!

No Golfer is an Island, if people feel that way its a bit sad. Golf will see golfers come and go, I love Tiger but in answer to the question, NO! he is not needed, but he is good to watch and sometimes very exciting.

Freddie, if your going to insult me (I know its friendly banter but still) atleast spell my name right.

And talking rubbish, get a grip, Do you honestly beleive golf NEEDS Tiger??? If you do, your deluded. Whats going to happen when he retires? Are golf clubs going to close the doors? PGA tour have a final event and close the curtains?

Give over, I bet people said the same about Seve, Jack, and Faldo, they dont play on tour anymore, and its still going.

And if you do beleive it then what are you doing sitting here typing away, you best get out and make the most of it, Tiger could retire in the next few years, who knows whats going to happen, then golf won't exist.

Here- my taxi just pulled up, you can take it! :D

You've hit the nail on the head Tony, at this present time, Tiger Woods is the best player in the world, and for the next 5 or so years i reckon he still will be....at this time then golf definitely DOES need him. When Tiger gives up the ghost then there will be someone new to take over the mantle, and then that person will be in the same state that Tiger is now.

All sports NEED their best players to be playing, to that there is no argument whatsoever.

I'll tell you exactly what I am trying to say, and that is that Golf needs good, exciting players and plenty of them. Rory is about to become one, Mickelson already is one, I am sure plenty more will join them.

When Tiger didn't play, plenty more players beleived they could win tournaments so they were fought better. With him playing well, too many are happy to settle for a placed finish and not risk/reward themselves. It has been said a million times over,

Golf doesn't need Tiger Woods, Golf needs more players with his ability and determination. That is what I am saying!

so it doesn't need Tiger it needs more Tigers

Tony - remember a few years back, i think it was 1999 ish when your team, Man United pulled out of the FA Cup so that they could play in the world club championships?

The FA Cup that year was tainted because the best team in the land wasn't taking part in it.

Tiger raised the ante in the same way that Arnie and Jack did for earlier generations.

That is needed every generation or two to keep the game improving.

Golf needed Tiger to do it - American golf was stagnating before him, there was no one else willing or able to step up to the plate.

PW wouldn't have reached the level he has without Tiger.

Tiger won't go on for ever, but until the next Superhero appears, he's the best we're gonna have. Rory might not be good enough. But if he is, he'll tell Tiger when it's time to step down.

Until then Tiger is vital to golf.

Pro golfers used to fall into one of two groups you were either naturally talented (Seve Woosie Arnie etc) or you worked your ass off (Nick Jack Monty) now you need both and you also need to be an athlete that is how far tiger lifted the bar

Thats why the well known athlete Angel won then? :D

I definately think that being as superfit as Tiger is has been of benefit on occassion.

But as said by HNJ, a fat bloke on his day can do just aswell.

Infact sod the diet, where's my frying pan?
:D :D :D :D
