so after being a keen golfer, buying new clubs, practicing loads, playing at every opportunity, I went to a play once a week and practice now and again sort soon followed by being a nomad and hit the range if the sun was out and a forum meet was on the cards sort of golfer.

Now I cant even be bothered going to the range :(

I spent money on lessons and saw some improvement, spent some more and went backwards.

Now I am at the point where my clubs are in the spare room and the thought of going to the range is nil

Its annoying as I know how much I enjoyed it but I have just lost the love for a while now. My newish job is demanding time wise so maybe thats what it is, I just cant understand why the thought of golf is not there at all...

being crap might have something to do with it though :)

Anyone else been there? Did the spark re-ignite?

I am slightly gutted as I recall the decent rounds, a few trophies and banter on meets etc but right now they feel a million miles away :(

As above, you need to have the passion this time of year if not it can be anti- constructive

Eat drink and be merry and we'll see you on the tee spring time gibbo , on the plus side your not a member of anywhere at the moment so it's not costing you not to play ;)

I want to go out just as much in winter as i do in summer, probably even more as the chances you have to go out are less, due to weather/dark nights.

It makes me look forward to a game as you never know when the next one will be if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Steve. Nobody can relight your fire apart from you and this time of year possibly isn't a good time to even try.

Take a break, put the clubs away till spring, and instead go sit on a freezing wet riverbank and dangle your rod in the water .

If you don't catch your death of cold, I reckon there is a good chance that you'll fancy a knock come spring.

Speak to someone like Smiffy who has been there.

Good luck fella

Mate, I know how you feel, I stopped for pretty much the whole of last season and even left my club, however the love is back now and I just try and feel lucky to be on the course no matter what state my games in. Stay with it, I'm sure you will return to play, meantime if you want a range partner or indeed a game just let me know.

It would be a great shame if you sell all your gear and give up a sport that you loved so much. If I were you I'd do a Smiffy, put the stuff away for a while and see in the spring/summer whether you get an urge to hit a ball or two and go from there, it'll be so much harder if you've go no gear to hit with!

Whatever you do though I wish you all the best

I have had phases where i've not been too bothered about playing. As has been highlighted, the time of year doesn't help. Normally i've found that after a spell of leaving the clubs in the cupboard that 9 holes, sometimes on a course that i havent played before or played very often, usually rekindles the fire. Plus it helps if you can get to play on a day when the weather's ok! A nice, crisp winter's morn usually does the trick!

Could just be Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD), which is a form of depression that some people get in the Winter, not helped by the clock change to GMT. We are only four weeks away the the shortest day, and then things start to get better again, so suggest that the OP hangs on to his gear for a few months. :)

I lost the buzz in the summer (of all times!) and just couldn't really be bothered. Starting to get back into it now, and the flame is beginning to be re-ignited and I look forward to the weekends to go and play. It will come back, and if you sell everything on, you will regret it in the long run. Clean the bats up, put them somewhere safe and come back in the Spring!

We all get down about golf from time to time but when you start hitting some good shots again or have a good round you'll soon get back enthusiasm for it.

It might help to try a different coach or approach to learning.

It happens matey. Few years ago after buggering my knee up, my game fell apart. I couldn't swing like I was and needed to make some changes. I just lost all enthusiasm for the game and hardly played for 2 years. I then had a couple of rounds with some mates and the bug bit again. The lay off really helped as I came back more like a blank sheet, had a few lessons and changed my swing reasonably easily and not looked back since.

My advice would be shut the clubs away from sight and forget about golf for the winter. Sooner or later you will find yourself getting a club out of the cupboard and just holding it wanting to hit some balls again. Go straight for a lesson and get back on it again...

I have not hit a ball since september, through no other reason than time really, have not had a spare 5 minutes!

To make matters worse, I got a brand new putter over 2 weeks ago now and it has not touched a ball! not even on the carpet!! :o

Most of us have been there, but don't give up just yet. As others have said, not many of us have the bug at this time of year.
It is a strange thing about golf. When you are not playing every week it's an easy habit to get out of and it can take a bit of effort to start to go out again. Once you are playing, you can't remember what you did when you weren't playing.
I think one of the major problems is that for most of us, golf rarely meets our expectations. It's a really hard game and we think we should be better than our scores suggest. As you have alluded to, you can have lessons and see no improvement. Hard work does not always pay off and usually there doesn't seem to be any reason why.
I would say forget it for now and see how you feel in the spring. If there is no desire then, do something else. You owe golf nothing and life is too short. I would bet you will enjoy your first game back. In the meantime, enjoy the banter on here. This is a good part of golf!:)

I lost my mojo when my kids were born, and found it again when time allowed 2/3 years later, got the bug so bad now.... new irons, joined a club and play at least once a weekend whatever the weather, and practice at the range while dark nights prevent time on the course.

So not to worry the bug will return you just need to recharge the batteries

Don't put too much pressure on yourself Gibbo.

If you're not enjoying it, take a little break but don't worry about it. The bug will come back. It's impossible to pinpoint something that will cause it to happen, it might be something like watching golf on TV at somepoint, or speaking to a mate about the game, but something will trigger it without doubt.

If you do decide to persist, the suggestion above about switching to a different pro is a good one. I had lots of lessons with a couple of different pros without making much progress. Then, a combination of reading the content on the golf loopy website (which explained the mechanics of the swing in such a way that I finally understood how it worked) and a very good pro had me knock 7 shots off my handicap this season. It's not just a matter of finding a good pro, it's a matter of finding one that teaches in a way that resonates with you. So don't be fooled into thinking that you won't make progress even with lessons, you absolutely will but it's a case of finding the right person for you.

Don't sell your clubs - put them away for a bit if you don't feel like playing right now, but don't give up altogether just yet.

Speak to someone like Smiffy who has been there.

It will come back Steve, guaranteed.
You may not feel like it now, but at some point in the future the bug will bite again.
I love my fishing, as you know. But fishing is a solitary game, and I miss the banter of my mates on the golf course.
I will never be as keen as I was 20 years ago. I used to play even if the ground was frozen solid, and never (ever) let the rain put me off.
Bugger that now. I'll pick and choose my days.
I just want to get my handicap active again and play in some open competitions.
The biggest enjoyment for me is playing different golf courses. And open competitions will allow me to do that for not much money.
