Strap yourself in Daily Mail readers, the loony left at The Observer have an editorial about the membership policy at Muirfield. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/jul/14/golf-muirfield-sexism-observer-editorial

It's utter clap trap, they go moaning on about about the message it is sending out, calling Muirfield sexist for not allowing human beings to be members just because they have breasts. Unbelievable. What's next?? Asking for them to have the vote :o ??? Madness.

Do people still buy newspapers?
Yep, millions of them on a daly basis. If they didn't, I would be out of a job. Most newspapers also have a digital platform which receive millions of hits a day. This means that newspaper owners (not editors usually) wield significant power in this, and most other countries..

It was a bit (a lot?) of a flippant quote. Most people I know don't bother with newspapers or are content with Metro. A few friends have digital subscriptions. I don't think I have bought one since the late 90's

I took it as a joke TBH. There's a definitely an age limit with Newspapers now. Probably around the 40 mark. The ABC figures show that the Newspaper sale rate is dropping at pretty much the same level as the Death rate. Won't see me through to retirement anyway.

The loony left are at it in that bastion of communism, The Sunday Times. In it the golf correspondent Nick Pitt, who is probably a pen name for Lenin, states that the R&A take the issue of belly putters far more seriously than sexism. And also the flaw in the argument about men not being able to join ladies gyms comes when you substitute race for sex, and advocate the banning of black people, or Jews. Something that the writer claims used to be common in exclusive golf clubs.

He even has a go at the Association of Golf Writers, saying that they are another body as well as the R&A that concerns itself with maintaining privileges. And he also states that the R&A had made plans to admit women members, and not just token members that one could argue Augusta has done. But then these plans were put on hold when Augusta admitted the women as it did not want to be seen to follow the lead of another club or to be seen to be bowing to public pressure. And he concludes that this is a sorry reflection on the clubs ability to help lead the game into a fair and inclusive future.

Strong stuff from the Communist Worker, sorry Sunday Times golf correspondent.

bit old for that paper round now blue,I can see you now on your bike freewheeling down past the DW

Women can play and visit Muirfield. They just can't be members. I hope it doesn't change as they are not breaking any laws nor harming anyone. It is up to the club to decide what they want to do on this and the typically bullying "liberal" left should stay out of it. I am delighted to see them get wound up every year over it personally.

The best quote I have read on this is - men don't object in the slightest to women in golf clubs, they just don't want their wives there......

Edited to add that we get the Telegraph every day and the golf correspondents, Nick Pitt and Oliver Brown, are a right pair of sanctimonious, fawning, lefty muppets. I cannot abide the writing of either. It is absolute tripe for most of the time.

I am intrigued if someone thinks the writing in the Telegraph is well known hotbed of lefty liberalism...

Check the sports section. Deep down, most of them are a right bunch of reactionary student activists...

Not sure wht you imply that the complaints against the Hon Company of Edinburgh Golfers (previously the Gentleman Golfers of Leith) being 'men-only' are just coming from the Loony Left (whoever they are these days - if indeed they really exist to any great extent at all). It's just a bit misleading to associate this issue with the 'Loony Left' - but I grant it's easy to do so even although it is probably an issue that spans the political spectrum.

As it happens - my heart says the club shouldn't be men-only, but my head says it doesn't matter and they have every right to be men-only if that's what the members want.
