I'm looking to change my irons. I'm using Mizuno MX-900's that I've had for 8-9 years and they've seen me down from 20 to 12.
I've never been fitted so thought I would treat myself.
Of course, what happens? I played on Saturday and was 2 over gross (off 12) after 15 holes (had to stop then).
Do you think clubs sense the threat? :D

Definitely. They'll either keep firing the scores to keep you interested or will work to rule and you'll shoot masses. What fitting centres are near you? Always worth thinking about as it's an interesting thing to do

i suppose at the end of the day its your choice.

MX 900 from memory are forged cavity backs, and if they got you from 20 to 12 there can't be much wrong with them.

when my driver misbehaves i take it out and show it where the driver it ousted has been put ,this tends to reawaken a honeymoon period and it starts to do what the makers bulls hit about.

Before you drop a load of cash on new stuff, go to a club fitter and get him to check your lofts and lies. From 20 to 12 is a big jump and I suspect your swing may be a tad different now from where it was when you were off 20. I have just done the same, similar drop, my lies where a mile out and now I am hitting even more greens and fairways. Best £40 I have ever spent on golf stuff.

I might just do that as they were bought off the shelf.
Funnily enough, when I had a quick fitting at Ping stand at the Scottish Golf Show, I was apparently pretty much standard.
The MX-900's where great irons when they came out and still are to this day.

Trouble is I don't buy new irons very often and I keep having the new shinies calling me .......

If you want new irons just bloody do it man you deserve it after nine years of service! What better way to retire them than on a great round to leave fond memories, you don't necessarily need them but that's not the point this game is about enjoyment and new shinies bring joy

Now that's the post I was waiting for! Well done that man

Do much sense in this! My Tp cb's got me from 12 to 8 and truth be told was playing closer to 6, changes clubs and swing to suit the clubs and now my swing would beat suit a carp rod and ledger bomb.

Worst mistake I made

I'm not looking to change my swing to suit the clubs, but get the clubs to suit my swing.
And though I'd like lovely looking clubs, I'll use what suits me best.

And stop being sensible! :ears:

I just struggled from day 1 of changing despite being fitted for them. After months of struggling my swing naturally started to change to try and make the clubs work.

As I said above I sold my cb's playing close to 6hc level shooting plus 4/5/6 weekly, in all honesty I'm playing to around a true 20 at present. If instantly noticed an improvement going to cf16's that are almost identical in spec to what I had.

Just shows this fitting lark isn't all it's cracked up to be

Well I'm looking forward to Tuesday. It will be my first ever fitting and they've told me to bring my current clubs to see how they are set up compared to what the fitting says. I'll update once I've had the results.

Update. I have to say I really enjoyed my day at the Callaway fitting at St Andrews.
I was asked to take my clubs along and was given a basket of balls to warm up with while waiting for my appointment.

My fitter, Adam, was personable and very helpful. We went through a structured approach, first hitting my irons on the trackman and then on to an XR head with a variety of shafts (which it transpired went from lightest to heaviest).
A couple of practice shots and then 5 balls with each. After trying about 7 or 8 shafts we looked at the screen where the landing points were all shown in coloured rings, each colour defining a different shaft.
He then asked me to take out the rings which I thought gave the worst results and we finished up with one blue ring which was much smaller than the rest. I already knew which shaft it was before he even said as one, for me, just stood out.
The end results were a much tighter dispersion and about 10 yards longer with the XR 7 iron than the MX900 7 iron.
I also tried an apex head and an XR OS head but neither appealed to me.

So my final spec?
Callaway XR
2° flat
Standard length
UST Recoil shaft
Standard grip +1

The shaft was my surprise as if I bought off-the-shelf I would never have gone for graphite but the Recoil did just seemed to work for me. What it did show that the True Temper Super Lite, both in my own 7 iron and in XR caused me to push my shots which was interesting. I'm of an age when graphite shafts were of not good quality and so was sceptical but Adam explained about the Recoil and I've since read up on them and so I guess I'm sold. I certainly felt more in control and 'at one' with them.

Now just to get our Pro to give me a good deal .

A couple of interesting points came out of this.

I always struggle off mats and Adam said about 2 out of 10 are like that.

I have always struggled with hybrids and Adam reckoned it was because it's difficult to get one that would suit my angle of attack. When I tried out a few hybrids I could see him wincing as I struggled with them. He then got out the Big Bertha 3 utility which was better and I hit them far better than any of the others, so that even he went Wow. On standard 19° I was getting over 200 yards. That's mega long for me with that type of club. He notched it to 21° which gave me about 180. But I still felt I was pushing it so the jury is still out.

I grip my own clubs and I already do my grips as standard +1 and when he looked at my putter he asked me if I had done that as well, he was genuinely surprised as he said it was absolutely spot on so that was nice to hear :D

Glad you enjoyed it, sounds like an interesting and fun day.

Could you possibly explain what you meant by the above quote?

Apparently, because I need the lie to be 2* flat, the heel of the hybrid hits the ground causing me to push/fade/slice the ball. The Big Bertha hybrid is one that has two lie options as part of it's adjustment so it was closer to what I needed. I think tbh I'll go with 4-PW for the irons instead.
