Im moving out the frozen tundra of Roslin to Edinburgh for work reasons. Looking for a new course (i was at Glencorse previously), and haven't had the chance to play any non ed council courses in the city.

Really looking for a relatively flat course that isnt too long. Im prepared to get a flat next to the course for the next 9 months of my work assignment anyway. I dont mind about fees.

I haven't played all the Edinburgh courses, so can only give the ones I have played or at least walked round.

I don't mind the Edinburgh Council courses, with the exception of Silverknowes which I personally think is a howf of a course.

Maybe have a look at Prestonfield/Duddingston? I haven't played either but lived closeby for a time ... Prestonfield has better membership rates that Duddingston but it appears Duddingston is a better track - at least amongst those I've spoken to. It's dear though.

Craigmillar Park has a few wee hills and has been very wet recently.

There's plenty of Edinburgh-based folks, so you won't be short of opinions.

Lots of considerations, I suppose, but if you are flexible in terms of the exact location in Edinburgh you have plenty of options.

I still haven't played them all, although should knock off most of the remaining ones this year hopefully.

Of those I have played Duddingston and Mortonhall are my favourites. Duddy is pretty flat and Mortonhall not bad but a bit hillier. I'd probably be a member at Duddingston if they had a bigger ladies section.

They're a bit on the longer side. Liberton is relatively flat (a few gentle hills) but on the short side and it was in fabulous condition last year.

I'm not a fan of Prestonfield but haven't seen it at it's best - it really suffered from flooding two years ago and still had a lot of remedial work going on last year. Again, fairly flat though.

Over on the west Ratho Park is a decent and flat track but a wee bit out of town, perhaps.

Lots of others, check out this website if you haven't already seen it. There are other clubs that aren't members of this scheme. Happy to offer an opinion on any you care to hear about!

thank you very much for that. duddingston sounds like a good shout. I might look for a groupon offer for a round there.

i am a member of duddingston - it is a cracking course, best i've played in town (though i've not played either of the barnton offerings). if you contact the secretary explaining your interest in joining he may well be able to sort you out for a round. i'd offer to sign you on, but unfortunately my golf diary is full over the next couple of weeks. if you do join, i am part of an anti-clique group with 40+ members and we've always space for enthusiastic new members looking for a game.

mortonhall is also a good track, but it has one of the worst par 4s i've ever played - the 9th. quite a few good (,perhaps great) holes, but also quite a few i struggle to remember.

I agree re Mortonhall - there's a few samey up and back again holes on the back nine. And I still haven't worked out what the best shot off that ninth tee is - hate that hole!

Best shot on the 9th is one I've only managed once - a soaring fade over the trees into A1 position - lady luck obliging on that day. But in general I agree that is not a good hole.

Apologies for the threadjack, but....

Neither of those statements provides any evidence as to why it's a 'bad' hole! Just that you've played it badly!

And I still haven't worked out what the best shot off that ninth tee is - hate that hole!

And this indicates more that it's a 'challenging' one, with (several) options. Hate-able hole very probably (1st at The Shire certainly is!); Nasty? almost certainly; but bad?

@TSA/IanG Please explain why it's the hole that is bad and not merely your playing of it!

its bad because it feels like its been hastily squeezed in just to make up the 18. the only thing that redeems it is the fact it delivers you to the 10th.

ok from the tee you are faced with a ~200yrd strongly uphill shot to the joint of a 90 degree dog leg right. Excepting for some lady-luck powered soaring fade, cutting the dog leg is a very risky option. So after your drive and a lung busting slog up the hill, you are faced with a more or less blind and slightly uphill shot to the green which has a nasty drop both sides and some scrappy bumpy ground in front.

It is not a 'bad' hole in the sense that there is much ill-kept or too unfair about it. But 'good' holes one enjoys the challenge of while 'bad' holes one is happy get over with. By that definition many of Mortonhall's other 17 holes are good ones - e.g. 13th long straight par 4, hard as hell when the wind is blowing in your face but a 'good' hole nonetheless.

Frozen tundra....... there's not even been any snow out there this winter... yet ;)

Prestonfield, Dudingston and Mortonhall are all decent.

I don't like Ratho Park myself and if you were coming out that way then there is Niddry Castle, Dalmahoy and Harburn are all miles better, in my opinion of course

I'm not a huge fan of Prestonfield, though to illustrate Foxholer's point, that's probably because I played like a numpty when I was there.

Best Edinburgh course I've played is Royal Burgess but your chances of joining there are probably slim. I always hear good things about Duddingston, though.

Are you restricted to courses in Edinburgh, or would you be willing to travel? And do you want parkland or links?

Needs to be Edinburgh city and prefer parkland.

Baberton, Kingsknowe and Duddingston would fit the bill nicely. Burgess and Bruntsfield would also do but at a higher cost.

Haven't played Kingsknowe (hopefully this year!) and didn't suggest baberton due to its rolling hills! :D

Also haven't made it to the Burgess or Bruntsfield, for obvious reasons!
