Hi there

i am looking at moving from my current golf club ( Leen Valley @ Hucknall Nottinghamshire ) for Various reasons,

i've been looking at

Norwood Park - Southwell
Oakmere Park - Oxton
Springwater - Calverton

i do not want to pay ridiculous prices because only play once or twice a week
any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated on a course within 20 miles approx of Hucknall Nottinghamshire

Many Thanks
Scott

I'm looking to play some foot golf their, are you a fan of it or does it cause issues?

Notts courses tend to drain well, roadworks are a pain right now.

Work out what you want from a club, what you're willing to pay try them and go for it.

Location is important as the closer it is to home or work the more likely you'll play more.

I played Norwood in a society earlier in the year. 4, 6 and 12 were the stand out holes for me, given a few more years growth the course will be a lot tighter. It could be worth checking out, ask if you can get a cheap/courtesy round with the view to joining

Hi Scott

I live 3 miles from Lean Valley and have played it many times and am a regular visitor to the range there. I think it's a solid course and to me it fulfills an important function in that, as I'm not a member of a club, you can just turn up most times and get a round as a visitor. But as you know the quality isn't great when compared to neighbouring courses. Although the greens have got better recently from what they used to be.

Of the ones you suggested I think they are all much of a muchness and you will notice the improvement in quality from Lean Valley. I find Springwater is more forgiving and I always tend to score well there. I had a bad experience with a snooty member at Oakmere Park once, but I've also had a lesson there since and the pro was very friendly and helpful and the main course is good. And I think we have a member of Norwood on here.

Have you also considered Ramsdale? Back 9 is a bit of a trek at times but I quite like that course. Also Ormonde Fields is a nice track which isn't far away from you, but I think it does suffer a bit in the winter with drainage. I played Maywood once as well and was impressed, but that was a bit ago. Also as someone else suggested Rufford is OK most of the time, although I have played there a couple of times where the course was not in that great a nick and I sometimes think it has pretensions about it's station. The Nottinghamshire has a couple of good tracks but it may take more than 20 mins to get there from sunny Hucknall.

One thing to bear in mind is most of these mentioned do deals on the tee times/tee off times web sites. Which may not be an issue, but to be brutally honest that is one reason why I have not joined any club as I can play all these for a decent amount a lot of the time anyway.

The other option is to go for it and try Sherwood Forest, Hollinwell or Coxmoor. Not that far form Hucknall, but they are a bit tricky to get into.;)

As Homer said, ring a few up or email them. You may well be able to discount a few depending on how quickly they reply or how keen they are to get your business. best of luck and let us know which one you do join as as a resident of Watnall I'd be interested to hear which one you chose.

Have you considered Rufford? I played there recently and I thought it was decent for a pretty new course (20 odd years).

Not played there myself but a reliable source tells me a lot of hackers get on to Rufford and it is often very slow. That she loves her golf, and lives less than 5 mins away, but has said she'll never go back says enough to me.

To be fair from a bit of experience I;d say it's no better or worse than the other clubs mentioned as they all do tee off times/green fees etc, which I assume is where the majority of so called hackers come from. I've played Rufford a few times and I can't remember it being any slower than others in the vicinity.

Fair is as fair does, and speed is subjective of course. But if my Ma says slow, I'm inclined to believe her. ;)

Fellas,
I might be a bit late to this party, but here goes anyway.
I am a Norwood member and can advocate it's many plus points. It's a very friendly club first off and I've played many comps with people who were strangers on the 1st tee but not by the 18th, and many 9 holes after work just dropping on with whoever's there.
Excellent practice facilities (range and 2 putting/practice greens). The greens hold up very well in the winter and only played on 1 temp in 6 years. No joining fee and reasonable rates.
I have played Rufford a bunch of times as work in Ollerton and it's a decent track. Range is a bit crappy but the clubhouse is superb and is great to look out on the course with a drink after the round.
Oakmere I have not played but Springwater I have with a society a few times. It's a nice enough track but not challenging. Don't know about joining fees here but Rufford does still I think.
Hope this information helps and sorry if it's a bit late!
