Played at a corporate golf day on Friday. At the presentations, it was announced that the longest drive prize had been won by a woman playing off 11.

I was genuinely surprised at that happening. Had a look at the card this morning, the comp was on a par 5 which is 486 off the yellows and 410 off the reds.

I assume she would have played from the reds, which would then have given her a heck of an advantage?

Best practice would be to have separate male and female longest drives on different holes. Usually when there is only one it's on a hole with little difference between the tees meaning the women have no chance.

We always try and do ours on a hole where the ladies and gents tees are within 10 yards of each other

ones that get me is in a stapleford comp when the hole for the gents is a 400 yard par 4 but for the ladies in a 350 yard par 5?! yeah I get the advance tee but an extra shot?!

So, as I said, you run a mixed comp but rig it so the women have no chance.

For the second point, handicap adjustments based on SSS and par should take care of that. Simple.

its a difficult thing to get right, esp if its mixed.

ive only played two rounds with a long drive hole recently and one was at a drive able par 4 and the other was at a dogleg:rofl:

Er...Exactly the same chance as Men!

While physical differences mean that, as in this case, there should be separate events, there are too many instances, imo, where 'equality' has gone too far and women are now 'overcompensated'! Still far far too few where they are not sufficiently compensated though!

The first 3 pro ams at our place the long drive was won by a lady member, then they switched it to two separate long drives, same lady won all 3 played from our 18th hole the ladies tee is 50+ yards shorter than the men and said lady member spanks the ball 220-230 off the tee, great for the mixed team club comps not so much if you are a bloke in the pro am ha ha

Nonsense.

The point is you could never have a single long drive hole that would be fair for both genders and it's daft to even try.

Well done to her - at Pro Am's the longest drive is just on one hole and it can be won by a lady or man. Seen it won a few times by a lady and congrats to them.

For mixed ability/gender get rid of longest drive and either make it nearest the line up middle of fairway (harder to organise) or chose a fairly short par four and make it nearest the pin in two.
