I have a regular nosey on the for sale section and noticed how many sets of irons are 1/2" longer or more. I can't think I have ever seen a set shorter than regular. If we take a standard set as being the right length for an average male, approx. 5ft 9/10" then surely there should be as many shorter as longer. Do club mfrs, when fitting, offer shorter lengths or is it always standard or longer?

I just traded in a set that were an inch shorter than standard. I wasn't fit for them just got them second hand and wasn't a wear that they were shorter. So they do exist out there.

My simpleton's view would be - for someone who is short, you can at least grip an inch further down, whereas if you are tall, you don't have a work around option like that. So that might be why there are more long clubs out there than short ones. If indeed there are.

I've tried gripping down and it doesn't really work. Fine to punch a shot but I don't find it comfortable for a fuller shot. I do get your point though.

Interesting Garush, that is the first time I have seen or heard of a shorter set.

Quite a few shorter sets on ebay, annoyingly for me...however definitely more long than short.

It's probably the myth that taller players need longer clubs & vice versa, with the shorter players not wanting to play shorter clubs because of the loss of length. Personally, I struggle to get enough clubhead speed with the long irons & have mine a good 1¼" longer, tapering down to standard length below 7 iron. This also soften the shaft & I find that I can still get the ball airborne OK.

You should see the pros do this. Sometimes they're 2" or more down the shaft. I once saw Darren Clarke hit a 3 iron into the wind & his right hand was on the metal of the shaft. Went no higher than a snake's arse & came down next to the pin.

Before I was fitted I thought I'd need much shorter shafts [I'm 5'6''] but then was told all I needed was -1/4" as my arms were relatively long! It also meant that I didn't need to mess around with lie angles too. So I think reg/long/short are relative to the person.

I'm 5'5" and I use standard length. Never felt the need to try shorter clubs. Maybe a proper fitting would say different, but I'm happy with them as they are.

The lie angle is more important than the shaft length. If the lie angle is correct and the clubs seem too long you can always cut down the butt to the correct size.

I am 5' 10 but use clubs with a 2 degree flat lie. Remembering that different manufacturers may have a different lie angle to start with. I had no need to have my new Mizzzies lie angle changed.
