Now I've finally got fed up with my current hybrid and decided its time for a change. To be honest I'm yet to find a hybrid that I have liked. I think it's more of a mental block with the normal hybrids where I don't know whether to swing like it's an iron or a wood.

I'm thinking of just getting a long iron. My question is are 2 irons really that hard to hit? Is a 1 iron a definite no no? I play off 13 and would say my iron play is not too bad but the longest club I currently carry is a 4 iron.

I know the answer is to go and hit a few and see what suits best but I was just after peoples thoughts as to whether longer irons are more suited to better players.

Most pros carry hybrids and do not go below a 3 iron at best. Does that answer your question? ;)

As for the swing then I am sure every advice I have read is to swing them like an iron.

Still do this day i'm yet to find an easier 2 iron to hit than the Callaway x-12 or x-14 pro series. I still use the x-14's 2-PW and having had numerous iron fittings there aren't any clubs that I hit longer or straighter. You could pick up a 2 iron in either model for about £30 and they are a god send if you struggle with hybrids like I do. You can play little punches with them and be confident to set up and open the face slightly if you want to float one in. Lovely clubs.

You should try and do something like this if possible. Get on a launch monitor, take a long iron and a hybrid and see which one you hit target with most consistently. For Crossfield it turned out a Hybrid did a much better job that a 4 iron, and he now has a Nike Covert Hybrid in his bag.

I prefer long irons and carry all the way down to a 3 iron.

I did need something to fill the gap between that and my 4 wood and the most consistent option that fit was a 19° 913H.

I suppose it's a question of confidence.

If you feel confident holding a club then the chances of a positive outcome are more likely than looking down on something and having doubts.

I feel confident in hitting long irons from both the tee and turf, but, playing devils advocate, find the hybrid launches much better/easier than any 2 iron I've hit.

You've probably hit the nail on the head there, I've lost all confidence in my hybrid, in fact I cant remember the last time I even hit it. I'm well aware that it is user error but as soon as I'm telling myself I can't hit it.

I have a fairly large gap at the top end of my bag, after my 4 iron I have the hybrid (that I don't use) and then mini driver, which I think is a too big a gap.

Well I'm about as far away from a tour player as you could possibly get so I'll go with the long iron ;)

I'm sure I read somewhere that some people swing as they do their fairway woods. Maybe I amagined it, it wouldn't be the first time :mmm:

To be honest I've had the same issues and I'm playing a hybrid iron at the moment.
I've bought a couple of non OEM hybrids to practice with, they will replace the 4 and 5 irons depending on wind.

I hit my hybrid* like a long iron/fairway wood.....centre of the stance, head still and sweep it off the top.
They are just so easy to hit
*18 deg Ping Rapture.

It's still fun to hit long irons when having a knockabout though.

Hybrid wihout a doubt for me.More forgiving, just more adaptable like little chips round the green, cuts through the rough easier and can get plenty of height which i can't with a long iron and it goes longer than the equivalent iron, I carry 4 iron upwards.Hybrid 2 and 3

Could not hit a hybrid and was not impressed with them at all.

Had a lesson and fixed two things.

Firstly the ball position and moved it a touch forward of centre, like a long iron, rather than too far forward like my 3 wood.

I then slowed down my swing, especially the transition between back and through. I was lashing at it and even though it was a stiff graphite I was losing control. The better tempo from the top fixed things almost instantly.

Rather than buy a new club go get a lesson, far cheaper and will be more likely to fix the issue.

I wouldn't get a 2 iron. Too hard for most club golfers to hit consistently The cheapest option would be to get a lesson and learn how to use the existing model properly. Plenty of good models out there if you do want to get a new one but I would think if you struggle with one you'll struggle with others as there isn't too much difference in any of them

I purchased my new irons in 5-SW flavour and am now purchasing the matching 4 iron. I've got a 4h in the bag, but have absolutely no confidence with it whatsoever.
I know it's me and not the club. If I try to hit it like a fairway wood I'll thin/top it, if I move it back in my stance and try to hit it like an iron, I either fat it or make a good connection but with a mahoosive slice.
I've got zero confidence hitting it off the tee, I honestly think I'll be happier looking down on a slotted 4 iron!
If I need a little more distance than a 4 iron will give me, I'll grip down on my 5 wood. That seems to work a lot better than trying to hit this bloody hybrid.

In that case I'll offer you 10 of your English pounds for it! :D
