Just wondering what the general view of the forum is for acceptable dispersion of a long iron.....The longest i carry is a 4 iron of 24 degrees loft and then a 3h.....

Spent the last 1.5 hours at the range as im having a bit of a love hate relationship with my 4 iron for the past few rounds....Thats slowly creeping into the 5 but not as much...Now given that there's only 3/4's of an inch difference in length and 3 degrees in loft you would think that there wouldnt be an issue....

I was carrying the range balls 150mtrs but i was missing the target by 10-15 yards left and right...Not all the time but a good share.... Am i being a bit too critical of the results.....I once read that Annika Sorenstam said that she only thinks of long irons as transportation clubs from point a to point b and doesnt really worry too much about the accuracy side of things....

Thats not too bad on the range I carry my 4 iron about 170-180yrds but my dispersion is about 30 yards on a good day!

I think you need to find out why you are missing in both directions first.

Big high overcooked draws missing left Homer and Pushing the ones missing right...I could be exaggerating the guess of the miss distance but from 150mtrs it looked like about 10 yards anyway.....

I was fiddling a bit with the grip also.....Lefts hand showing the usual 2-2.5 knuckles but im guilty at times of getting the right hands a little too strong....So near the end of my basket i got the V in the right hand pointed more at my chin and more on top of the club which to me seems like that i have a slightly strong left hand grip then and a weak right hand grip but i was hitting the ball straighter......

Not sure if im curing a fault with a fault but it seemed to work.....

30 yard dispersion from 200 or so out leaves you on or very close to the green Kid - not too much to worry about.
Yea it can be improved but its not the end of the World by any means.
Watch any Tour event and see how much they miss by with 6's and 5's in their hands........
Isn't Rory's average about 20 feet from the pin with approaches? That's nigh on 7 yards and he doesn't always hit a 5 iron in....

Good post

Surely with a long iron you gotta be happy with either on the green or giving your short game a chance? I know i am and even if i was better than 19 i still would. As long as you give yourself a birdie chance with short irons then scoring should be decent. Even the pros accept not every hole is a birdie chance.

The width of the fairway is fine by me

The swing has shallowed out a fair bit James and im a bit hit an miss with the long irons...Catching them thin at times which was bugging the bejaysus out of me...So i hit the range tonight with the 4 iron and the 3h to mess with ball position and grip.....

From what i could gather my problem with the thins was not staying committed and not staying down until impact...Seemed i was coming out of the shot just a little too early and also the ball was a little too far forward....Seems like i sorted that eventually but the dispersion like i said was a bit iffy until i got the right hand more on top of the grip and the V pointing at my chin....That seemed to work...But i ran out of balls and my back was playing up so i headed home for a cuppa.

I was just struggling with it of late Murg....I think it was a factor of ball position and maybe going at it a bit too hard and coming out of the shot too early.....Seemed to figure things out a bit better as i was running out of balls... I think the ball position a little more back in my stance with the right hand grip might have done the trick....Ill chance it again Thursday night and see what happens.....

Am i right in thinking that 150 mtrs with a range ball would equate to about 165-170 mtrs with a decent ball...Thats roughly what id carry the 4 iron off a tee on a proper hit once i havent made a mess of the swing.

Sounds pretty decent to me, my 4 iron is mostly used for punching out of the trees. There are no par 4s & 3s long enough and no par 5s short short enough to need it at my place. I rarely hit more than a 7 in to a green so my long irons don't need to be massively accurate.

I think you'll find you've got the one fault, an excessive in to out swing path; when your clubface is square to your target you hook it, clubface square to the swing path you push it. As for the cure you'll need a better mind than mine to sort it out.
