What's the point?

If you missed the barney, you get the sanitised version, which gives no clue as to why it got locked in the first place. All the juicy bits are gone.

It must take time to edit it back to the publishable bits.

Why not just delete the whole thread?

I think a thread being blocked should indicate to the posters INVOLVED that they have crossed the line. Maybe for name calling or aggression , so they should be aware they could be on the naughty step soon or even blackballed. sad.

First thing Murph is not many threads do get locked, but those that do, are locked because they have gone a bit pear shaped for one reason or another.

It’s not a sanitized version, most threads are started with genuine questions, quotes, stories etc. It’s only when they start going down hill, squabbles, name calling, bickering, insults etc then we have to step in.

Most editing is done while the thread is still live, normally with a warning to try and get it back on track.

Deleting the whole thread is an option, but what about the people that have spent time contributing who weren’t involved in the squabbles, Why should they have their comments removed?

We have had arguments on the other side of the coin when threads have been deleted, we’ve been asked why we couldn’t just edit them.

We do our best and what we see fit, but can’t please everyone.

Nice explanation Twire, thank you.

I'd sway to this way of thinking but understand Murph's point of view as well. I think the "Dancing on Ice" thread where Colin wanted to sue the world when he slipped on a frozen fairway was a good example; because the thread went completely a further thread was started asking where the first one went, which led to a second bout of slapped wrists and a further deleted thread. The first one edited & closed would have saved the second round.

Another option would be to block the offending members/persons from posting further on that thread. Also delete the offending posts and issue a warning. But the thread should be kept going, I hate my threads getting the RIP .

Blocking members cannot be done on a per thread basis AFAIK, it is usually done on a sub forum basis. And only someone with admin rights can do it which moderators don't have so at the weekends the only option is to lock/delete a thread.

on another forum that I dont post on but view the comments, handles them by editing the offending post and inserting the mods comments in a different colour explaining why their text is removed.

This keeps the thread going, alerts everyone as to why an offending text has been edited while at the same time slapping the offenders wrists and sending a clear message to anyone else that the offending comments will not be tolerated.

It works extremely well and theres never any posts asking why, and no threads that suddenly dont make sense as posts have been 'tidied up', plus the majority (lets face it its always a minority that are catalysts) arent penalised by locking yet another thread.

where are all the posts after this one? all gone! perfect timing to implement post #7

Maybe my fault the thread was locked because of a failed attempt at humour by me, I'm not sure but if that was the reason , its sad but that's the way it is . no smiley.
