The current Mrs 148 and i decided we would go for a swim today, so headed around to the local pool and leisure centre which is run by the council.

only to find it closed for "the Holiday" not open again until the 3rd of Jan... the mind boggles i would have thought with the kids being on holiday it would be one of its busiest times.

any other local authority do this?

all of them.

They are run by jobs worths with a microbial amount of CS in their DNA.

When everyone is off and needing things to do, let's close the taxpayer funded leisure centre.

it was closed for the same length of time last Christmas. to make matters worse they have just spent a fortune re fitting the gym.

I can understand not being open on Christmas day, boxing day and new year, but the other 8 days makes no sense.

Traditionally it was the time to carry out maintenance activities, usually due to it being a quieter time with swim lessons etc. Some places do still take this approach. Our places were closed Christmas and Boxing Days, but been open since. Closed for NewYear and 2nd then back to normal I think.

To drain a pool, clean and do any grouting repairs before refilling and reheating and treating the water can take a lot longer than you think ;)

yep but do it on their quietest (recorded) period, not the busiest.........that's the point.

Slow learner!

Do they have telephones up there?

Nope, no sign of any life in there at all when i walked the dogs past there today. they just had the placed closed for two weeks when they refbd the Gym.

This will actually be one of their quietest periods of the year. No classes or lessons programmed and very limited footfall from casual users. Ideal time for a planned closure. Once school term time kicks in again, classes and lessons start up and will be big earners. Add to that any extended let's from Clubs for courts or pitches and it makes sense to have a closure now rather than disrupt during normally busy times.

Is the correct answer.

When I was involved in LG Leisure the weeks before Christmas and New Year were a totally dead time for swimming pools. It was an efficient, cost effective time to do essential maintenance.
Sorry to spoil the fun at taking a pop at an easy target.

Our place here in Northern Ireland is similar. Closed from 23rd December to 2nd January bar 29th & 30th Dec. Think it's pretty ridiculous tbh. Surely ppl at a loose end over hols esp with kids. They cd at least open part of centre if works going on. Ours have closed everything - main pool, leisure pool, gym (paid membership!) squash courts, main hall, outdoor courts etc. How does this tally with helping people become more active? I mean the weather's carp!

exactly!

It might be dead for swimming pools (I was there this morning at a private pool, very busy and a great way to spend new years eve morning) but it doesnt answer why the rest of the facilities are closed
