Saw a news clip yesterday about the historic waterfront and how it has a cultural status. They were saying that this is going to be destroyed if the waterfront which Peel holdings owns is redeveloped. Can understand that it needs doing. But will it change the City for better or worse.

The main bit by the 3 graces - Liver building, Cunard and port of Liverpool building is a UNESCO world heritage site and they say that skyscrapers etc may take the look of it, but they are mainly for further up the river. Personally I dont want us to lose the world heritage status, but the city has had a fantastic renaissance over the last 20 years, and is going from strength to strength, with further developments. It still needs more jobs and development, so cant be left behind either.

I dont think it will spoil the balance, as there are enough protected buildings (more than any other city outside of London), and not even sure if that includes Goodison or not (not sure if it is saxon or Roman).:D

Well said LB. As an infrequent visitor to the centre of Liverpool I have to say the transformation since the City of Culture year is significant. The centre and surrounds were frankly a dump before then. The city has really cleaned its act up, literally in terms of the litter which used to cover the place, and it is something to be proud of now. Well worth a visit if people have not been and I don't just mean to go out on the lash.

That is in a nutshell what I thought. They had two "experts" on the box yesterday, one for and one against the proposed changes. But Mr middle man did not seem to get a say. Missis T took us to Liverpool a few years ago for another mucky free weekend. We both loved it and had one of our best nights out there in "Alma de Cuba". Think the nayers are upset that Liverpool may lose its UNESCO world heritage badge if the development goes ahead.

I can't believe that anyone will choose not to go to Liverpool because it has lost world heritage status. Sounds great in council literature but otherwise pretty pointless.

It's not pretty pointless at all, it brings in extra revenue for the city, which it needs due to government cuts.

We don't need more student accommodation/steel framed cladded buildings though.

It's "rumoured" Councillor/mayor Bung....sorrry Councillor/mayor Anderson Is in the pockets of certain developers in the city.

You've been reading the Liverpool Echo Facebook comments pages haven't you?

Val, the area being redeveloped is the area just outside the city centre heading North along the dock road. It needs development as it's a mess at the moment.

I'm not on snitchbook mate so I don't know what's being said in fairness.

The north end has been left to decay by Numerous local governments over the last 25yrs if not more, high unemployment, very little opportunities, it's very sad. Granted there's some wronguns but the majority of people want improvements jobs etc.

Stu, how does it bring in extra revenue? People go to Liverpool for a number of reasons but I doubt heritage status ever comes into it.

Grants etc for being a UNESCO world heritage.

We should be protecting our heritage not throwing it away for student accommodation when in 10yrs time will be empty because people can't afford to send their kids to university.

A certain company thinks they can do what they want where they want.....

Would that be Peel holdings who bought into UK Coal because of the land it owned and had representaion on the board which never helped the miners/me. ?☹️

I'm talking about heading north out of the city centre via the dock road. The dock that they are proposing to redevelop needs updating. Agree re: the north end of the city, I'm from around there.

The echo facebook comments go into overdrive every time student accommodation is mentioned. Usually accompanied by negative comments regarding Joe Anderson and brown envelopes.

It must be true about Anderson then

The amount of student accommodation across the city centre has tripled in recent years. That new proposed lime street project for more student accommodation is a disgrace.

We're in need of an improved business district, office space and that area would've been perfect for links to manchester/leeds/london etc.

The dock rd has been forgotten about for decades. These businesses shouldn't be allowed to let land/areas go to ruin the way they do.

You've only got to look at how LFC were allowed to let the streets of anfield fall into the state they got whilst local governments stood watching and waiting 20+ years.
