Still think about what to do for my golf this year

While full private membership is out of the question.

I have the choice of playing social golf with some comps attached although without handicap rights or i could join a local Muni Club:

I know there is a few guys in the merseyside area on here, So whats you opinion on the following Muni Courses

Bootle, Bowering Park, Kirkby, Allerton and Sherdly Park.

I have played all of them but Sherdly Park, so just gaging other peoples opinion of them.

I've never played Sherdley Park, but of the others, Bootle is the best condition of greens, Kirkby is the best lay out (some very good holes), Bowring Park is the shortest (and easiest) Allerton is the busiest.

Having recently returned to playing, I've just joined Kirkby for the next 12 months, get my handicap back, get back to playing in comps again.

It is by no means ideal playing 'Muni Golf', but even if you just see it as a way to get a recognised handicap, you can they play any course you want in outside comps (usually at reduced green fees)

Cheers PeterLav,

Sums up my thoughts pretty well.

What are you paying membership wise for Kirby?, Do you know when they run there comps? and how do they work? Do they have a block booking on a saturday morning?

Is pretty high up on the list, as i only live in Whiston so is only 10mins down the motoway.

cheers

Honest opinion Kirby long and very wide, Bowring short and tight. Yet to play the others as only just started playing once a month.

Dont forget Aintree its a good little 9 hole course worth a visit.

Sherdley park is by far the best, played a couple of times, also played Bootle and live not far from Allerton so played there quite a bit. But Sherdley has superb facilities and a lot of people assume it is private. Arrowe Park on the Wirral is another fine course that has its own little club house, but there are rumours that it may become private soon.

Cheers for the comments guys,

I will give sherdly park a look in, what worries me about it, the back 9 i could probably just about drive 4 of the holes.

I wonder how much of a challenge it would be, given that the SSS is -3 under par even of the whites and no par 4 over 400y.

Again Allerton is very busy and other than the first couple of holes is a very shory course.

Bootle has a good mix of holes and normally good greens but spoilt by its scuffy appearance and lack of money spent on it.

Bowering, No par5s and again fairly short and from what i remember the holes over motoway tend to be very wet.

Kirkby in pole position i think, 10 mins from home and tee times prebooked for a saturday morning

Sherdley is an excellent course, not too short, some nice challenging holes. Its got a great layout, nice variety, the only thing it is missing is a few water hazards. The 4 you could probably drive are all quite hilly, so on the card they look straight forward, but take into account the hills, and the tree's give it a shot.

When its wet some parts of the course can get a bit boggy. But in the frost even the winter greens are better than some of the permenant greens on private courses.

Give it a go, they have offers on for twi-light golf Monday/ Tuesdays after 2pm. a cheap membership package that most can afford, and good comps. Also the driving range is less than half a mile away.

Good luck whichever one you go for

Kirkby is great for a muni! Also walton hall in warrington is worth a visit. I live in Kirkby and use it a fair bit. Aintree is so busy and very long for a 9 hole! Took me an hour to play 3 holes the other day. I have also been using the practice facilities on the new place on the rainford bypass. The par 3 course is worth a look, especially for a fiver during the week!

They are currently building a driving range in the middle of Bootle and because of this they will be creating a new 1st hole and a new green for the 9th. There is also a new club house being built and all this is supposed to be completed by Oct 11. In the meantime it's all a bit of a mess.

I have no doubt, if they ever get the money to do what is promised at bootle it will probably be the best Muni in the Liverpool area, I believe it was already meant to be finished but the company that leased it off the council asked for more time due to lack of funds.

Bootle has a links like feel to fit, with some intersting holes, stand out holes for me are 5th, 7th,12th,13th. But needs some money spent on the place.

A lot has to with some of golfers that use it, After the halfway hut and 10th green the place is covered with plastic cups after people having a 1/2 time brew, there is a big bin yet people see fit just dump it on the ground or hang them on trees.

and you dont really see this at other muni courses any where near as much.

I know you are asking about muni courses but i think at the moment woolton golf club are doing a round of golf and full english for £20! and no im not a member :D

I know you said a private club is a no go, but a membership at Sherdley is about £450 all in, or £16 a round. Eccelston Park, Rainhill is just around the corner from you and am sure a membership there is about £650 might be worth looking at.
