My brother and I both took early retirement recently and there's a local club with a couple of courses, one ideal for improving hackers like us, and another more suited and frequented by the better players.
Anyway, over the previous few weeks the club staff had been telling us the advantages of taking out membership and we'd decided to do this as it looked fairly cost effective. We decided to leave it until after Xmas.
In the meantime I visited the local AG last week to look at putters and got talking to another customer. During the conversation he told me that knew the club pro at this club and that they were closing the course we played on as it wasn't cost effective. They would just retain the better course.

He lived near to the course but said he wouldn't play there after the closure as the better course gets very busy and would be busier now. He also found it a little intimidating trying to keep up with skilled groups and being watched when teeing off etc.

Anyway my brother and I decided to get in a game on Friday and see if there was any information on this closure as it could have just been a rumour.
There was no information regarding this anywhere in the club shop so I asked the guy serving us.
Without comment he reached under the counter and passed over a typed piece of A4 paper for us to read. I was a little p'eed by his attitude and asked him to just tell us what was happening. He said the course we played was closing and going back to arable land. I asked how long before this happens and he told me in two days (Sunday 4th Jan)
I said it would have been nice to have been told this when he'd been pushing us down the annual membership route. I just got a blank stare so thanked him and went out to play.

I know these things happen but I thought the whole thing was very poorly managed and left a bad taste.

I'd be rightly aggrieved about that, have a word about the membership with someone and explain that course as one of the main reasons you were joining.

I guess the question is do you want to stay a member? if you do then nothing really changes does it? but if you feel like you were misrepresentedly sold the membership then bring it up.

We didn't actually take out membership.
We were going to do so on the Friday we played but as luck would have it I'd heard their plans from the guy I ran into at AG.

I'd be more than a little niggled.
You've been sold membership to play the 2 courses when they knew full well 1 was closing.
Makes it worse that you had to find out about it from some random bloke in AG.

Demand your money back. They sold you a product they were intending to withdraw during the term covered by the sale. Open and shut case of mis-selling. And they know it.

Fair nasty not to mention it when trying to sell membership all the same , wouldnt trust them & b last time i played there aswell

Wonder what the current members have to say about it? Will there subs be halved to go with the facilities being halved?

Give Thorpe Wood a go, decent course.
Update
I've played the two Nene Valley courses many years ago - Thorpe Wood and Orton Meadows.
Decided to try the shorter course Nene Valley yesterday. What a great little course it is.
Anyway me and my brother signed up today to become members/subscribers and couldn't be happier.
The annual fees amount to about half what we would pay as pay as you play players.
Booked in to play the Thorpe Wood course on Monday :)
