For me Messi this year has shown that he is still the best player in the world, regardless of what Ronaldo has done. When it comes to the crunch, in the games that have mattered, Messi has done the business whilst Ronaldo has been lacking. The CL semi-finals were very much a case in point.

Have to agree with this! Ronaldo has a lot of dependence on the rest of the team putting the ball in the right place for him - along with some spectacular dead-ball goals. Messi can actually manufacture the goals from (seemingly) nowhere, so is a far more dangerous - and better - player imo.
