We're in the middle of getting connected in our new house and I had no interest in getting a landline but, with the "bundle" it didn't make sense not to. I can't remember the exact figures but it was either cheaper (!) with a landline or fairly negligible difference.

Anyone here ditch their line rental/house phone?

I am looking at changing my broadband provider and wondered has anyone cancelled their phone/line rental as I don't really use house phone and don't think i'd miss it.

Do you really need a house phone and paying line rental?

Unless you get direct cable, you need a phone line for broadband. I think that Virgin are the only UK provider that will do this.

I still have a phone line but no longer have a home phone i.e. no handset plugged into the wall.

Will deffo be keeping an eye out in the future for options to save money by ditching the line rental charge I pay for a phone line I don't use.

Not everyone is on a mobile contract, getting free minutes, and so people are often resentful of ringing mobile numbers from their own landlines. Worth bearing in mind if that is an issue. My sister in law tried going mobile only for a spell but her parents really didn't take to it, I can understand why to be fair as all of their landline calls are free but they are charged for ringing a mobile.

You also need a consistently strong mobile signal, something we do not have at home.

I ditched my landline when we moved earlier this year, I pay 'line rental' but only for the physical copper cable that comes in to the house; a phone wouldn't work even if you did plug one in.

I'm getting my broadband from Arnold and Andrews.

My BT price is incluseive of line rental, as are several others now.

£33.99 for 55Mbps Infinity , BT sport and free evening/weekend calls.

I ditched the line rental a few years back.

Have a gizmo that plugs into the router which allows regular phones to run from it, and kept same landline number.

Obviously only works when internet is up, but typically a glut of mobiles in the house.

Not with virgin broadband either.

What does your router connect to? who is the provider?

I think we're about to change. Virgin has just finished digging the road up round our way and they called to see if we were interested, but they don't do land lines in our area yet.

I'm quite happy to ditch it but the Mrs wants to keep it because people leave messages on it where they won't on her mobile

Its a crazy world out there.

Paying line rental upfront helps.

In my case having your provider screw up and connecting you weeks late helps too, got their fastest connection (200Mb) for the price of their standard for a year.

Its really hard to get a great deal, like with mobile contracts, TV subscriptions, gym memberships, you always seem to end up paying for something you dont need/use.

The only reason we have a landline is so the wife's mother can ring her without having to pay for the call. It never gets used otherwise as we both use our mobiles which have unlimited free calls.

So in effect, I am paying £18 a month so her mother can ring up for free!

That's family life for you 😁. Les Dawson could work a routine around this set up, ha ha.

This. And is what we have done. No more random calls! Problems is now Virgin have upped the cost for BB only to £25.25 and a package with TV/LL/BB is....£30. The only thing stopping me from having this is TIVO. Blurg. Never again. My TV with freeview comes on immediately.

?? Get here a mobile with a £5 a month rolling contract. 300 free minutes. You're welcome.
