How many people use this technique of drawing a straight line on the ball?

I tried this last night and had a terrible time of actually lining the ball up towards the hole. It looked right when i was kneeling down but completely off when i took a step back. Is there a technique to it or is it just a case of taking ages to get it right?

I do it and I know what you mean that it might not look right but when I trust the line it usually goes close.

Trust the line!!! your eye dominance will try and trick you when you stand up! if in doubt, stop, go back behind the ball and check, it will be right, you just need to trust it!

No please don't do this bit, especially if it's me stood on the fairway behind you waiting to play my approach, just hit the dam ball :D

well I don't.....

if you rely on that
1.how are you going to putt from 1" off the green?
2. how is your back going to feel after marking the ball so so so many times a round?
3. how are you going to feel when you really really want to adjust it once more and your playing partners are threatening you with a painful death (or paying for the first round) 'cos you are holding everyone up?
4. etc

but hey, it's legal and you feel better doing it so just keep at it :sbox:

I do it. Have done for years, however I often have practice rounds not lining up to ensure that skill element isn't lost.

I'd recommend it to most people.

Like what has been said previously, it is important you trust where that line is else whats the point. Make your decision, stick to it and aim for 6in beyond the hole.

1.how are you going to putt from 1" off the green? Line up over a blemish on the grass in this instance. We have more putts from on the green than off it.
2. how is your back going to feel after marking the ball so so so many times a round? Fine, thanks.
3. how are you going to feel when you really really want to adjust it once more and your playing partners are threatening you with a painful death (or paying for the first round) 'cos you are holding everyone up? Line it up as best as I can and if it's pointing a bit off then I allow for it when I set up. You get better at lining the ball up the more you do it btw
4. etc etc.

Bold.

i have always used the name on the ball, now they even draw a line on the ball to aid your lining up,i normally have a good look at all angles before i putt.

I used to draw a line on the ball for every putt, it could sometimes take me a few goes to get it right, once one of my regular playing partners said to me he did not know why I bothered.

After that I went to making sure I could see no marks on the ball when I replaced it and used the lines on the putter and a blemish on the green or the hole for the line, my putting improved so much I never use the line now I just find it can muddy the waters too much.

Read the putt, see the line, line the putter up, check the line while over the ball then hit it.....

Works for me

Putting is simple. Thinking about it too much makes it difficult

Had you been on the sauce??..Line hole...Hole line= ball in hole - or + slight break..:)..Providing putting speed is the same co-efficient of stroke!!!
