Lights Switch Off 10pm

My grandad was at The Somme.
Invalided home with shrapnel in his back, discharged himself and went back.
Got shot in the face by a sniper, invalided home, discharged himself and went back.
He couldn't lie in a hospital bed knowing what his mates were having to endure.
He never talked about it afterwards and was a VERY bitter man.

God bless.

They say that the tommies never really talked of their experiences - they are correct. My grandfather never discussed his time in the trenches with my mother at all - though would occasionally talk a little about it with my dad - who served in the merchant navy in the Med and Red Sea - so not a bundle of laughs either,

Most of us lost someone from our families in WW1 or had someone who managed to survive it. Those poor lads who went blindly into a war that didnt end wars.

'The Green Fields of France' is to me a haunting memory of what happened to them:

Watched the ceremonies from Mons and Westminster the latter with the lights off and candle lit, thought about my mother's uncles who lost their lives and my wife's grandfather who won the MC twice and survived, and the millions of others who served. Then blew out the candle at 11.00. Thought overall it was fitting tribute to those who fought and fell.

Mons was perfectly done, sombre and respectful.
