Today, i can truly call myself a golfer – Went round in level PAR for the first time ever today. 3birdies and 3bogies, the rest pars.
Had a moment of clarity today and thought id share with you guys as the wife is giving me funny looks!
Playing partner called off at last minute so decided to play on my own. I have been moaning about my cold putter lately so decided to record my stats and analyse later to see if i could flag up a problem area to work on. Well bugger me, did i not go out and play the round of my life.
I am not a stats type guy, more a grip and rip type that loves a good chat during the round. Well today i was determined to concentrate on my stats and can’t believe the difference it made to my round, amazing.
Although, initially I was interested in my putting stats i decided to go the full hog and record everything about my round. Wow i can’t believe the difference that this focus made to my scores. I was completely zoned out and had a focus never experienced before on the golf course. The notion of playing one shot at a time suddenly made sense.
On the tee my absolute focus was to hit the fairway, nothing else mattered, didn’t care how far it went and in fact i probably lost distance because i was trying to be accurate. I have never hit the driver as straight as i did today. I only averaged about 220yards which was short by my normal standard. I missed one fairway the whole round and the miss was on the first cut.
When going for the green my focus was on GIR stats and because of that i was aiming at the middle of the green on every shot, couldn’t care less where the flag was because i wanted good stats for my GIR. I have never hit my irons as well as today, couldn’t believe it. Only missed two greens and both misses were on the fringe. I think the focus on keeping my stats good had improved my iron play.
Same with putting and early on during the round i am completely obsessed by my stats and my top priority was to keep the stats sheet clean and concentrate only on that shot.
Here are the stats from my skycaddie.I only played 17 holes due to a short par3 being out for maintenance
Fairways Hit - 92%, (13 out of 14) average distance 225 yards
GIR - 88% (15 out of 17) (2missed on the fringe)
Putts – 32 for 17holes (2x3putts) & (4 single puts)
17holes played (115yard par3, Si18 out for maint)
3 Birdies, 3 bogies, 11 pars
Not quite sure what to make of all this, but it seems that when i only focused on one thing at a time, ie hitting the fairway or green etc it made everything else click into place! I tried not to think about lengths, flags, swing thoughts etc
Still think i might have a cold putter tho
Thanks for listening.
