Was out yesterday with my regular PP who is a beginner like me. The course was pretty quiet as it normally is this time of year.

Our course has 2 long par 5s in a row. As we were teeing off on the second par 5, I noticed a guy playing on his own coming down the first par 5.

A couple of shots later we are not far from the green and my partner is about to play. I looked back, to see the other guy in the middle of the fairway about 170 yards back, lining up a shot. He then hits it, and it heads straight towards my PP. I shouted at him to watch out, and the ball landed about 10 feet from where he was stood. No warning from the guy who played the shot.

The guy then marches up to my partner, says "are you a beginner?" then starts ranting on about how he was supposed to let people playing faster than him play through, then picks up his ball without completing the hole, and storms off in the direction of another hole (not the next one).

I am normally pretty aware of people getting held up by us, and always let them play through. I would have let this guy go in front of us as soon as we had finished the hole.

So, were we out of order and should we have let him though as soon as we saw him on the same hole as us, or was he just a nutcase?

He was a nutcase. Letting him through on the next tee would have been perfectly reasonable.

Its highly dangerous to hit a ball anywhere near other players, he was rude and arrogant too - id complain about him if you know who he is

Some people play on their own because they like to. Others because they find no one willing to play with him. I have a feeling the gentleman in question was of the latter kind. You did nothing wrong. Beginner or not, you have every right to finish the hole in peace (and without being bombarded from behind) before letting someone through.

i'd have made him wait, these 1 balls have no standing.

Not true. Used to be but not anymore unless your course has a local rule saying otherwise.

Back to the point, agreed he was a nutcase and rude as well. Don't worry about idiots like him.

I'd have started a fight with him then.

Well, sounds like the op did not have much choice in the matter :p guy picked up his ball and left. What were they supposed to do about it? Tie him to the next tree until they finish the hole?

sounds like a plan

Very sorry, I was in a bad mood, and I won't do it again LOL

Well i would encourage people who are slow to stand aside and let people through as sadly this is a part of the game that is getting worse but what this guy done was out of order. I take it you were not holding him to the point he had had enough ? Still not the right thing for him to do

Hang on...middle of the fairway, 170 yard shot....no it definitely wasn't you :D:D

I like Paddy's approach...golf is too 'hands off' most of the time ;)

He deliberately hit into the group. Let him through? Not. A. Chance.

He can stay behind all day and I might even slow down a bit for a short time.

So by doing this you slow him down ?

And everyone else behind you on the course, great idea.......not
