I am due to be making the move to Letchworth later in the year but like any avid golfer one of the sticking points to the move is proximity to a decent course.

The closest course to the town is Lectchworth GC and I wondered how do the good people of Golf Monthly rate the club under the following headings:

1) Course layout and upkeep
2) Club Facilities - pratice areas etc
3) Regular competitions?
4) Club atmosphere

Unfortunately they do not state their joining fee on their website but I'm suprised they even have one these days, its not like the course is inside the M25. Any other points about the course would be great.

gets the thumbs up from a couple of members I know & our seniors played there in a club macth last week and enjoyed it immensely.

I believe it can be a little bit stuffy but the course itself and facilities are considered very good

I think the joining fee is 2k payable over 3 years but could be wrong.

Thanks G1. 2K joining fee is a bit of a kicker, I bet in the few years that will be gone however its good to hear the course is held in high regard.

they are quite happy to maintain the fee as they have a full membership and I believe a waiting list so wont be in any rush to abolish it.

I would ring them as I may be out on the fee.

Thats makes sense, why abolish a joining fee when there is still demand to join the course.

One further question do they have a driving range? I dont see anything on their website

I dont think they do but there are 2 decent ones straight up or down the a1, 1 at AG in biggleswade and 1 at Chesfield Downs GC in stevenage. One of the members I know (not seen him for a while though) said they had good practice facilities but he always used the range at Chesfield Downs GC but might have been for convenience as he lives in Stevenage.

welcome to the forum

brief review in the op of the above thread, sadly my planned game there was snowed off but am hoping to play there at the end of the month. the one member there i know is certainly very happy there and my pro speaks very highly of the condition it is always in, hopefully it works out for you. depending on how local to the course you want to be may be worth checking out john o gaunt, which is 10 miles or so north up the A1 at Sandy (2 decent courses but you may again have the same issue re joining fee), alternative options I guess would be to head south to Knebworth or Welwyn, or across to the various courses at Wheathampstead/Harpenden way

I have played there quite a few times over the years in Society days & club matches, always found it to be an enjoyable, well maintained, interesting members course. The members have generally been friendly, all in all a pretty good members club, not sure on joining fee (we still maintain one at our club which is about 10 miles south)

Thanks for the replies all, looks good so far. Hoping to get some information on clubs comps now. I could ring up the club however they would naturally paint a pretty picture about club life so doing a before of research beforehand can be very valuable indeed
