As a Junior member with a handicap of 15, I greatly enjoy my clubs monthly competitions. I think it is great how myself and a few other juniors are accepted by the adult members as part of the field and are welcome to play. However in other, smaller, competitions generally held at different clubs we are shunned away and told we are not allowed to participate, despite having a legit handicap and playing off the back tees. I ask, why is this? We are the golfers of the future and if we are not allowed to play now, why should we play at all?

The juniors play in our mens comps and usually win them!

Welcome to the Forum!

Problem is these old fellas don't like getting beaten by the young pups, if your being readily welcomed by the members at your club, play in full comps at home but only go in for junior opens at other courses (they're better priced any way) and get as many top courses in as you can, as soon as you hit 18 the green fees more often than not double!

then don't play at these clubs! many fair clubs encourage jnrs of a certain handicap to play in snr comps.

Big hello from me too and a second to junior opens get as many in as you can during school hols whilst you can. :)

Im gonna put a slightly different slant on this. Firstly Id like to say juniors regularly play in our medals and I happily play with whoever Im drawn and enjoy playing with the youngsters (and often play with them outside of comps too as Im often there midweek as are they, as I did today!). I think in home club medals is the perfect scenario to compete and learn, but I do understand why some open comps arent necessarily so.

The reason I think you have come across this probably in some Open comps is partly because of how some of the better younger players approach low handicap comps. There is many a tale of players playing scratch or low handicap comps, where the majority are still entering with having fun as their main objective (and often paying handsomely for the privilege), only to be drawn with a low handicap youngster or two who basically say hello on the first tee then shakes hands again on the 18th green. In between he doesnt say a word just mimics a tour pro in his approach. For the older more sanguine player this isnt the ideal environment for him in an open comp and ultimately this has led to a complete amateur tour where there is a minimum age (of I think 35) which enables scratch competitions but with like minded individuals.

*Now Im not saying that there should be age restrictions on most comps, all the big amateur trophies certainly shouldnt have age restrictions, but I think there is also room for some comps where there are restrictions. Also the references I make are towards some but not all of the younger players

Welcome along. It's a problem at many places and I think stems from nothing more than out and out jealousy by adult members resenting the ability of talented juniors. I was lucky that my old club had a lot of good men on the committee and in charge who encouraged the juniors to get involved in monthly medals and stablefords.

I agree with others though. Carry on playing in club comps but if you want to be allowed to play other courses off the comp tees you'll normally need to enter junior opens. These tend to be played at some courses and are usually pretty cheap compared to standard green fees to enter and they really show how good your game is compared to others of your age
