Whats your preference Trackman etc or good old fashioned your pro watching you hit balls and going from there.

The reason i ask is I've had experience of both and thought the Trackman was the way forward but i lost all feel in my swing ( didn't have much ) and felt i was vert robotic trying to get certain numbers in attack angle ,club path ,face angle etc and in the end it was a shambles and lost the enjoyment factor of playing.

Went back to my club pro and I'm now hitting the ball like i was a few years back when i got to single figures very consitent shape something i hadn't had in a long time, all done by eye, since i went back to him i dropped 2 full shots and now enjoy my golf again.

Funny, I've done both this last few months and liked each. I guess the overriding factor is whether I feel I've improved and I'm happy at the moment that it's coming together well at the moment

trackman and video ideally plus a pro who knows what hes talking about and can provide decent drills to change the numbers

I found i wasn't getting any drills just basically use trackman to find the numbers whereas with my pro it was work on getting more width and a higher finish as i suffer from back problems i can't at time make a full turn

thats just a summary of where you are at not a lesson for me, the numbers are great to highlight whats happening but you still need the pro to work with you to work out the best way forward!

Mixture of both, it needs a good coach to use trackman properly and benefit the player, otherwise it's a bunch of numbers. Have met one or two that can tell you exactly what the trackman numbers mean, but no real clue how to use them to benefit the student.

I prefer to have just me and my coach working from ball flight. My coach uses an Ipad to film and that's it. I prefer it this way as I can get too technical and caught up in numbers otherwise. Ball flight is the true test of the changes and it is all I have when I'm practicing the changes so it works for me. No point in having a session on trackman if I can't then practice on it for the next few weeks when ingrain the changes.

That's a good question Steve as I have been going through something similar, was having (still am but getting there) driving issues and the odd inconsistent iron shot and thought that I had to go and get the number and see myself on video etc. Went to see the head pro at our club, not had a lesson with him before and was told he was old school, doesn't want to pay for the tech etc, but thought I'd give him a try. Spent close to an hour with him, and what I got was the cause of the problem, what I should be doing, and the drills to get me there, no numbers, no video, he did take two photos on my phone to show me that the change in set up was far less dramatic then it felt!
So I now know what's happening and how to get it right. Feel much better about my swing and driver, I know I need to work on grounding it in, but I know what to do, Sen him again after a couple of weeks to check progress, and I have gone from 3/10 with the driver to 7/10, I know I'm going to hit the odd iffy one, but if I can hit 8-9/10 less erratic I'll be over the moon, I'm not talking striped down the middle, just not 80 yards right or left haha!
Glad it working for you, I think sometimes we get focused on tech too much and numbers that often don't mean that much but we get carried away.

JT thats what i felt i was to focused on numbers and my head got filled with rubbish. Went back to the pro at my place he's only in his 30s but very knowledgeable on the golf swing, he has a Flightscope but uses it for club fittings, he prefers taking the odd photo on your phone. Had one on Tuesday i wasn't to happy with my irons just kept hitting on the green i was aiming at ,he did notice i hit a couple of shots just of the green that my right hand came of the club at impact a bit, hit a few more trying a drill and hit the ball much more solid.

but it can often be a lot faster and easier to explain something to or convince a pupil of something if they have the numbers on trackman there in front of them

Perhaps indoors, but out on the range the improving direction/contact is all the golfer needs

def Steve, I think it for me it took away trying to hit 2500 spin or launching it at 14 deg or whatever, I was able to see the flight, the shape, felt the contact and the strike, and also able to see how bad a bad one was in comparison, not looking at figs saying spin was nailed on and this that and other, but yeah its 80 yards right! haha!

I like a pro that is capable of using modern technology like Trackman but can retain the ability to teach and improve simply by watching, maybe with a simple video clip and as Bob says, focus on strike and direction. I do have some lessons with technology, for example, if I wanted feedback on driver or wedge spin etc. It's about finding the right pro and the right methods
