Hello all,

just got back from a week off. Standing on the 14th tee one day, swung a 3 wood and ended up having an impromptu club throwing (well, more dropping) experience. Thought I had snapped the metacarple(bone in hand below little finger on left hand) to be honest!

Ended up going to casualty and thankfully I seem to have just jarred the tendons badly and now have it in a tubigrip and can hardly bend it five days later.

Has anybody else had this sort of injury playing golf?

I'm guessing it's either a legacy from a motorcycle injury about ten years ago, a profound grip/swing flaw or probably a bit of both.

The net result is that I either get it sorted or i'll have to hang my clubs up.

First step after resting it will be to go and get a video swing lesson and see what's going on, hope there's something very obvious that I can address and if not find another sport.

The irony of it is that I had a video lesson booked for the following day to sort this out but the injury meant I couldn't even hold a club. Still, my other half had the lesson instead which was really good for her game as the pro was able to show her some things to work on.

Such is life

Bad luck Billy
I had a problem for a while with stiffnes in 4th and 5th finger of right hand which made me suspect my grip and swing were wrong. think it's better following lessons.
Hope you are fit soon (and teh weather may be warmer by then!)

Sounds Painful.

I once cut the fleshy pad of my thump on a sharp knive when doing the dishes, the day before i was going on a golfing holiday. still tried to play but the after 4 holes the cut opened up and my glove was bright red after 8.

needless to say, I don't wash dishes a week before any major comps.

Little finger on my left hand can't bend more than half way before it goes real stiff. If I want to bend it fully it twangs and then locks bent, it hurts a bit to straighten it and in the mornings i have to physicaly straighten it with my other hand!

Hi Billyg
Sorry to hear you are having abit of trouble with the hand, I used to have alot of problems with my left thumb (double jointed) and after about 5 holes could hardly move it, I saw our pro and he adjusted my grip and now no longer get problems, other than when it's damp or really cold my wrists and elbows ache like crazy.
Hopefully you won't be out of it too long, take care

I crushed the middle knouckle on my right hand 5 years ago and I was out of the game for SIX weeks. Even now my middle finger is shorter than my ring finger next to it.

Sore injury but it will heal. One thing I would avoid is hitting balls off the range matts. I would advise you hit from grass as it yields a bit more than astro and will not jar your hand.

Thanks for all the encouragement folks.

I'm off to the GP tommorrow for some advice about physio etc.

Already started looking around for somewhere to get a video analysis done.

Been reading some internet stuff about damage to the hamate bone which seems alarmingly accurate but worryingly doesn't show up on a normal x-ray.

With the left hand kaput it's no golf or guitar for a while - bah

Still, can't think of another pastime that makes me willing to go out at the mercy of the weather, dress like a nut, put up with injuries , ga's and blisters, spend a small fortune and for all that play like a mortally crippled Orangutan....and come back for more .

If you stop to think about it golf is a quite preposterous game , ludicrous even yet it's got something about it which most other pastimes can't even approach. I suppose the one that springs to mind first and foremost is that it's a players sport and not just a spectators sport for most of us. Each weekend we head out there and actually play it rather than rely solely on the vicarious pleasure of reading about it or watching it on the tellybox. All that despite the quite ridiculous commitment of time , hassle and money that it requires to take part.

Since taking the game up as a club member my weekends have changed out of all recognition in order to accomodate a desire to get out there and play. This is the first Sunday in months ive just sat at home and i'm dumfounded as to how I ever did it for all those years!

I'm getting withdrawal after a week - i'll be climbing the walls after a month

thanks again,

billyG
