Have a few mates looking for a new club in Surrey. He lives in Weybridge. He's taken a look at Leatherhead and thinks it might be a good option. Any one here a member that can offer an opinion on the course and membership?

Thanks

Not played it personally but was advised a few years ago by a pro that it was a good course if you only want to play 9 months of the year, as apparently it gets very soggy. You also have the M25 noise to contend with if that is an issue.

Very quirky and always feel the last few holes were crammed in to a space too small. I don't like it that much and if your mate is in Weybridge there would be other options going the other way (even my own place, but loads in between). I guess it comes down to budget and how far he wants to travel

Agree with everything in this, not a big fan and really wasn't when I saw their saw their intermediate pricing structure. I ended up going with The Drift where the main drawback is it getting quite wet in the winter, but large improvements are being made year on year. Very nice membership and a good range with free balls.

There are about 15 clubs in the Weybridge area I would look at before Leatherhead. As said its a matter of pricing/convenience in the end but to throw another name into the fold West Byfleet is so much better. Always worth shooting a message to the likes of Woking, West Hill and Worplesdon to see what they are like re wait lists or proposer/seconder and all that stuff.

Homer, did they have to redesign because of the M25?

I have only played the course once, in april time a couple of years ago and half the course was off mats because of how wet it was, and they were all about 100 yards up the fairway, not a great day and could imagine it would often be shut

Played it a couple of times with Hywel (who was a member) and Homer and was appreciative of the knock.
It's okay, a few nice holes, but some that are totally meh!
As others have said, there are many better courses in the area.

Leatherhead lost their original 1st/18th holes when the M25 arrived some 30 years ago. They built a new 14th hole parallel to the motorway and then put in a par 3 almost alongside the 16th where you have to walk back the length of the hole to reach the tee. They did the best they could but the money they received paid for the new clubhouse which is pretty decent.

Overall the course is OK, nothing special but not too shabby either. I've always got the impression that they are more interested in the money than the golf.

Did get my first-ever birdie on what is now their 18th, a 200-yard par-3, when I sneaked on as a kid and played a few holes.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have passed your feedback on and he is most appreciative. Looks like a bit of a non-starter!

He's fairly happy to travel and willing to spend circa 1200-1500, perhaps slightly more but is keen to avoid any clubs that have joining fees.

He's thought about Windlesham, Royal Ascot, West Byfleet, Chobham, Calcott and everything in between.

We currently play at Wokefield Park, but although the course can be great (and a real challenge) it gets very very wet in winter and very very dry / hard in summer. It used to be great value for money because they were slack at deducting the points when you played (Devere Venues point system), but they have implemented a new system and points are being deducted and for the cost it is now going to be over a year, it just doesn't represent value for money, so considering pastures new.

Wokefield Park of the unnecessarily wavy fairway mowing pattern ;)? Windlesham is poor and expensive, Ascot and Chobham are quality memberships from experience even if Chobham gets very wet in the winter (tee the ball up everywhere some weeks in the swindle).

If he's interested in Roay Ascot give me a shout and he (and you) are welcome for a game. Alternatively we are running a couple of open days http://www.royalascotgolfclub.co.uk/

What about Tyrrells Wood ? West Byfleet is decent and so is Betchworth Park.

Agreed. Go with any of these three. Really like WB and BP - haven't played TW but heard good things about it.

I played Leatherhead in a company day about 15 years ago, I can't remember a single thing about it.

Maybe that tells you something? :o
