laying up on par 3's ...

I've got one hole, not even that long (170yds), where I take the club that needs a perfect strike to reach the green. If (as often happens) I don't hit it perfectly, then I'm short, rather than long! Takes out the trouble left/right as well, as it doesn't go far enough to reach them! Easy chip on, one putt par. (or so the theory goes)

We've got a 244 yard par 3 at our place (with a green that's too small to support that yardage truth be told). I normally have a crack with the 3 wood but in all honesty the sensible play would be to lay up.

done it a few times on the 2nd and 6th at Royal Dornoch when the flags were both front ish, no trouble at the front short of the bunkers. go par on both.... take that every time on those.

our 14th as well, short front, much easier put up hill, with the flag on the ridge, far better than on the green in the back Gully, all downhill;)

I'll be laying up on 1 maybe 2 of the par 3's tomorrow

Combination of dangers left/right but mostly just too freaking long!

Not necessarily laying up, but have played the odd hole where short is safest so play to just get on and am not unhappy with just short.

Our 3rd par 3 is 190 yards with bunkers at the front but I always missed left. I've parred it 20% of the medals I've played on and have taken 6 on it 20% of the time.

No longer.

It's a 7 iron then chip on for me and walk off smiling with a 4.

SI 17

Just managed to find a pic of one par 3 that I'll play safe/short with tomorrow, its 190 yards... what would you do?

edit: to be fair this pic was taken right of the teebox as there's a thin strip of grass down the left that you can land on

Our 14th, 210 yards off the whites, water in front and trees at the back, always into the wind. around 190 clears the water, lost many a 3 wood in there, also driver does not hold green, best bet is to 6 iron wedge it,hopefully 1 putt and walk off with a 3/4. Saying that I have birdied it!

Have tried it before on my old course, 160/170 yds with a ditch across the front of the green and trees all around the sides and back.
But tbh I chipped into the water so often it was pretty pointless :o

Doesn't look like there's any trouble through the back so take plenty of club and go for it....!

OK, depends on the carry...... might need to lay up! :smirk:

Our 18th is 230yds off the whites, and whilst I'll pretend that I can reach with a hybrid, I know all but the best strikes will leave me short, which is by far the safest place to be, with rubbish left, right and long.

Not sure I'd be as short as GMac though!

With my short game, I'm more likely to hit the green from 220 than 30 yards.......so no

Nae bother, just a downhill chip onto a green that slopes towards the r/h bunker/water and reads 11-12 on the stimp... doddle

I'll try to remember this thread after the weekend and let folks know exactly in what way I managed to screw it up this time :p
