Hiya

So the new house has got a monster rear garden and a reasonably sized front garden. I'm considering investing in a quality mower with a rear roller. Whole new world for me so any recommendations welcome.

Cheers

Any cheaper options out there? Can't fault the quality but was hoping to spend under £500. Also does a self propelled mower essentially make it much easier to get straighter lines?

Ive a very large garden and had a sit on mower for a while and was bugger to control. Also still have a large cylinder mower and a rotary.

The cylinder cuts way too much grass unless you have a very fine lawn and takes twice as long to do, that is now gathering dust in a shed somewhere.

I have a Hayter 48 Briggs and Stratton - Fantastic machine ive had for 10 years runs faultlessly. You get what you pay for with Mowers and if you cant afford a new one see what's available second hand - Honda, Hayter, Mountfield are all quality makes - make sure you get the right size though aswhen I was buying I was told a lawn should take c 45 minutes to cut - any longer the your mower is too small. You get what youre paying for.

Thanks Mark

Further research has told me that actually I only have a medium sized garden but for a lad that grew up in a terraced house in East London with a 2x2 concrete square out back it's a blooming meadow!!!!!

I've always dreamed of having one of those quintessentially English gardens with a nice array of trees shrubs and flowers and a beautiful carpet of striped grass. Guess I may need to save a little to make it a reality but definitely see it as a long term investment!

Thanks everyone

Had a mountfield years ago and it was a beast. Could do with a service every so often though. Will cut grass no probs but then you start getting serious about weed and feed scarifying etc etc.

then there's the enemy........... moles.

Already on that tashy :) hand weeded front lawn. Weed & Feed front and back. Got some spike shoes and aerated both. Got a scarifier from a friend and just done the front so far top dressing and overseeding tomorrow. Not sure I'll have the money to do the back lawn till September though as it'll cost about a ton in seed and soil :)

What I am finding is that the garden is keeping me very centred and relieving any stress. Loving it :)
