Hopefully should be some good gardeners on here, after all we all like to tell the greenkeepers what to do!
Basically I've started trying to get our garden to an acceptable level. Its quite a big garden and I think it got too much for the lady who lived here before us so its quite a bit of work.
I've treated the lawn with a moss killer as there was a fair bit in it, unfortuantley I didn't realise just how much, now I have more bare patches than I do grass! Whats the best way to get the lawn back? I assume it will need re-seeding at some point as I can't see it growing back on its own now, its too far gone. Any suggestions to what type of seed I should get? I want something fairly hard wearing so the kids can play on it.

There are some very good hard wearing short leaved Rye grass seed around nowadays which should do the trick.
Scratch the bare bits up with a springbok rake and overseed, keep the birds off [feathered variety] and water often.
Best time to seed is late August as the seed is then not in competition with weeds.
Regular cuts, once /twice a week, will also help the remaining grass. It is amazing how fast it can recover.

That doesn't mean to say you shouldn't re-seed it now - perfect for growing grass currently and the weeds will grow anyway!
Unless you use a roller mower (doesn't seem like it's appropriate at the mo) then more seed will be spread from existing lawn into the bare/seeded areas as you mow them. Don't touch the seeded areas until there is no possibility of simply uprooting the 'crop'. Don't have huge expectations for this year, but it should be able to be sorted ready for next. If grass wasn't deemed beneficial, it would be the most hated weed in the world!

Never understand why people want to get rid of moss in their lawn. It is green throughout the year, and doesn't need to be cut. If you have young children it is nice and soft for them when they fall over.

My lawn is full of moss, but once the grass areas have been mown you would never know.

There are plenty of different types of grass seed, so recommend a visit to your local garden centre.

Recently purchased a cheep 'n cheerful lawn repair kit from Lidl [could've been Aldi]... You get a bag of seed and a bag of 'growmore'... Has done the job very nicely with very little effort on my part... Not run the mower across it yet but reckon I will have to do so very shortly...

I would re seed it in late autumn ( September or October ) when the soil is still warm but damp enough for the seed to germinate. If the area is not too big then scratch the area over with a rake just enough to roughen the top 1/2 to 1 inch of soil then spread the seed on top and if there is any old compost about lightly spread over and cover the seed.

If the area is too big to do this then just spread the seed over the area and leave it, after all, grass will grow in gravel so it will grow in soil that isn't prepared.

Dont worry if you see birds having a peck, they are more interested in the grubs in the grass than your seed.

Most seed sold in DIY stores will be ok, it will take about 4 weeks to germinate enough to cut and you only want to take the top third off the new stuff so don't go mad. It will tiller from that first cut and produce more stems from each seed plant. Wait a couple of weeks and repeat and voila! A great lawn.

ASAP; Hire a Power Rake and set of low to be aggressive to pull up moss and 'thatch'; then mow - collecting all debris. Re-seed and, if possible spread with lawn sand (lightly). Water frequently and you'll soon have growth this season

Google "green thumb" they treat your lawns for all kinds of stuff for about £15 a visit. We have a anti moss treatment before winter and a anti dandelion in the spring. It works a treat on my lawn

At the weekend possibly Saturday I put some seed in with some kiln dried sand that i bought for the little one from toys r us. To my surprise there were green shoots coming through yesterday (Monday). I did put some seed down just over a week ago without the sand and that did nothing prior to me adding the sand.

We have loads of moss in the back (Shadey overhanging trees) and loads of thatch at the front

in February Green Thumb stick their moss killer down and I then scarify with an electric scarifier/lawn rake. and the back then looks like the somme

then I top dress with a mixture of 3 parts topsoil to 1 part sharp sand (washed) and mix in loads of grass seed.

As it starts to warm up it germinates and the gaps all fill in as if by magic

from late April onwards it looks really nice IMG_0930.jpg
