Played a bit of golf in my twenties with a h/cap of 18. Took it up again a couple of years ago at the age of 61. The past few months have played regularly, practiced a bit and had lessons. Have had some success in club comps culminating yesterday in 4th place in the club's annual comp with 39 points.Since April my h/cap has reduced by 5 to 17.6. At the back of my mind I had set myself the target of matching the h/cap of 18 all those years ago.
I would like to set myself another realistic handicap target.Would be very interested to hear of the experiences of forumers in a similar age group and what they have aimed for and how far they have succeeded.

My Dad who is nearly 67 and even a good hit these days is around 190 yards always aims to par the par threes and bogey everything else so sets the handicap aim to 13 or 14 depending on what course we play which seems to work well so don't see why 14 can not be a realistic aim for yourself.

Everything depends on your fitness, how much you play and practice and your desire to go lower. There's nothing wrong with playing off 18 but I'm sure if you really were dedicated/talented you could achieve single figures as I don't believe age is a barrier ( I'm 61 too)

Thanks for the replies which have helped to see other perspectives. The roll up group that I regularly play with are almost all retired
and seem to be content to bumble along and enjoy their golf with no push to improve playing standards. I'm certainly more motivated and will take a bit of all your input - play, practice a bit, take the occasional lesson and see where it goes. Not forgetting to smell the odd rose.
