Laser Eye Treatment

I know, I know, this is a golf forum, but stay with me a moment.

I played nine holes on Saturday in the pouring rain and before I played my second shot my glases were soaked and I couldn't see and before I reached the second tee my glasses cleaning cloth was sodden and unusable.

So, laser eye treatment.

Anyone had it or know someone who has?

Who did it for you/them and (eye)ball-park price if you will.

Thank you

I wear contact lenses. Problem solved.

Laser eye surgery seems to be for people who don't really need it in the first place. My left eye is +5.5 correction. Laser eye surgery cannot guarantee any results at this level of correction. Hence it is pointless. If it was +1, they could do it easily, but what would be the point, as I would only need glasses / contacts part time anyway.

You only have 1 pair of eyes, and they have to last 80 years approx. I wouldn't let anybody anywhere near them with a laser.

I've never got on with contact lenses, although am considering them just for golf whilst I look into the laser treatment.

I'm not sure I like the idea of the laser, and certainly would be avoiding the cheaper end options as I find it hard to beleive their work can be of the same standard.

Something I am seriously considering, but contacts and new irons may be a better use of my (wife's) money

I wear contact lens, but only because my eyes are too young to actually have laser eye surgery on them. My mother had the surgery about a year ago (unfortunately, I don't know how weak her eyes were)

She was two days in bed afterwards with bruising around the eyes, and since then has had no complications. She said it's a revelation and she can see perfectly, as a keen swimmer - she obviously has the advantage of being able to see clearly in the swimming pool.

Ballpark figure here, but I believe she paid £400 for both eyes and it was on ebay. Lol, despite it being from ebay it was not some backstreet guy who flunked his dental exams and decided to play with eyes - it was from a registered eye clinic and they simple used ebay as a way of promoting themselves.

Good luck.

Hi Spoff.

had it done 8 years ago through Optimax in bristol. Cost £495 per eye. I believe the procedure I had is now cheaper though the newer Lasik treatment is now available and more costly.

Won't bore you with the exact details, feel free to PM me if needed. My eyes have been brilliant since - though I have started to go slightly long sighted in my left eye now. No major concern though.

Highly recommend it and it pays for iteslf in a few years if you use contact lenses and glasses.

if you do go for it I recomend using a very well established company. I know it was 8 ya=ears ago but Optiamx were fab. I had previoulsy gone for an appointment 15 years ago but they were honest and stated that at the time they couldn't improve my eye sight enough to warrant the op' though it would have reached the level for driving. Suggested I stick with glasses until theire lasers were able to deal with the astigmatism I had. Definetly didn't come across as in it for the money types.

I also know quite a few others who've had the op' some with other companies and everyone has been happy - no complaints.

good luck.
john.

Ironically Boots the chemist seems to have a good reputation, and they are very expensive too.

I looked at Optimax, but they would not touch my eyes, as in order to keep up their 99% success rate, they only do people who don't really need it. (by this I mean people who can navigate accross a room without walking into the furniture).

JohnG, that is exactly what I was hoping to read.

I'm not blind, but certainly couldn't drive a car (or a ball) without my glasses on. I'll be neededing an eye test later this year so wanting to make a decision before then.

Don't want to fork out on new glasses if I am getting this done.

I did look into it (no pun intended) briefly.
At the time they said they could improve one end (either long or short, can't remember which) but not the other and I would still need glasses, albeit single vision.
They also said that fixing one end does not mean that the other will not deteriorate so glasses would again be required.

I like the detail Ican see without glasses up close. I'd loose that if I had lazer eye surgery...

I sometimes wear contacts.. Yeahn they take some time to get used to, but well worth it, especially on a damp day.

Only thing is If I've not had them in for a while it means getting used to putting them in & taking them out all over again. And eyes can get tired quickly when no longer used to them, but eyes soon aclimatise again.

I had it done at Boots 5 years ago. Best thing I ever did, cost a bomb but I didn't mind!

I was +5 in each eye and now have 20/20 vision.

I would recommend it - infact I have done many times!

When you wake up the next morning and can see the alarm clock 1 foot away from your bed it's fantastic, then you go downstairs and can read the numberplate across the road, Best feeling ever!

Yup.....it's true. I looked into it a few months back after reading stuff about "from £295 per eye" and all that jazz.
Truth is, for my prescription I'd be up at £2-3,000 with no guarantee......not good.
I wore c-lenses for 15 years and then one day, I couldn't :(

I asked my optician if I could try some modern lenses.....after A LOT of persuasion (they wanted £200 for trial lenses....."what, at under £10 cost??") I got 5 pairs for free (they had all the measurements). Still no good.

My mum has the same problem....she spent nearly a grand on trying lots of different types - the optician spent 30 minutes with her then gave her 10 sets over about 2 months....if they'd done this to me, I'd be in prison for arson on the optician's Range Rover......barclays bankers.....a grand?!?!? :( for nothing

I have considered it, my bro and a pal are having it done and 2 girls I know have already had it done.

This may sound stupid but I decided against it as I know it is only a minute chance but being blind would be awful if it happened so that swayed me away.

Accidents can happen so as anal as I may be, for me no.

Anyway, glasses look good on me allegedly.

My bother had it done 18 mths ago and he is quite happy with the result. His golf hasn't improved dramatically but hes great at spotting where your ball went.

I had my eyes lasered (lasek) at Ultralase in Newcastle. Very expensive (3K for both eyes) - 1 day of discomfort but delighted with results. I was -2.25 in both eyes now 20/20 vision. My wife had hers done 18 months earlier at a different company for £995 and had many complications so for me its a case of you pay for what you get!

Hope this helps!

How many of you out there read number plates first thing? Most people I know who've had the op marvel at the ceiling patterns! ;)
