I was delighted to be invited down to Largs last night with Andy for a quick 18 holes. We pegged it up about 1720 and were off the course less than 3 hours later. Perfect.
Largs is a strange course to pigeonhole, its not parkland, it is tree lined but a lot of the holes have tight links like turf. What it is though is a fantastic golf course presented in immaculate condition. Largs always looks as though its been hoovered to me. There never seems to be anything out of place, the fairways are manicured and precision cut, the bunkers are always impeccable (unless Andy slashes about in them depositing half a ton of sand onto my line!) and the greens are usually quick and true. What else Largs has going for it is the views over to Millport, the Wee Cumbrae, Arran, and Bute.
The course has a premium on accuracy off the tee and the straighter driver will be rewarded as a good few of the holes are tree lined. Sensible accurate bunkering always has you concentrating on your approaches.
Overall Largs is a good test of golf and a nice place to play golf. The best hole on the course, for me, is the par 4 9th a brilliant dog leg, right to left with a burn to contend with, two large trees guarding the entrance to a green which is surrounded by bunkers and to top it off a wicked step on the green meaning you need to find the right level to two putt. Great hole.
The worst, well I'll let Andy tell you about my woes!!!!!! Even after a perfectly struck 17 degree hybrid off the tee for safety into A1 position I've still never parred that abortion!

(If Andy offers you a game at his new home, grab it. You won't be disappointed.)
