Hi Guys,

I've not been able to get onto the forum very much lately because my Compaq Presario V6630EM Notebook has recently died! An independent engineers report showed that the 2 year old system had a motherboard fault - a manufacture fault – and after weeks of negotiations/badgering I’ve been awarded a £310 partial refund towards a new laptop from PC World or Currys. Pretty decent result I suppose, seen as though I paid £430 for it, 2 years ago.

I’ve managed to narrow my choices down to one these two systems, which appear fairly similar – both with Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 Processors. I'm not planning on using the laptop for gaming, but it would be used for geography related map work, with similar GIS programs to Google Earth. Would these systems meet the demands, or are better notebooks available from PC World or Currys at a similar price?

Packard Bell EasyNote TR86-BT-021

Packard Bell TJ65-BT-041

Any suggestions, or alternatives would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advanced!

Bad luck. Still, £310 is a pretty good bonus.

Following on from my post about having the "proper" windows operating system installation dvd, I'd never buy a PC again without the disk, as if you have a hard-drive failure you'll lose the O.S.

I've just backed up BOTH my desktop and laptop completely, windows and all. I'm hoping that with various "copies" of my hard drives knocking around, I could recover a failed hard-drive.

Interestingly, being a boring old git, I subscribe to which? magazine and their current recommendation is the ACER Aspire 7735Z,

which I've found for you at ebuyer.com

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167375

which? don't normally get it wrong.....

just remember to use the back-up utility if it has one!!!

Actually, the top score in the Which? test went to the Macbook, which has a very elegant backup system built in. As you say, they don't normally get it wrong.

The Acer was also a best buy, to be fair.

I'm sure it was......and at nearly twice the price it should be. I never said it was the top score, only one of their recommendations. Personally, I'm not a big Acer fan. I have a travel notebook/web browser running linux limpus and although it works, there's zero support.

Macs are excellent. I use a G5 at work and it's excellent.
If I had the money for one at home, I'd go with apple....it's a no-brainer.

What I don't get is all the mac worship......clearly anyone buying a windows laptop over £800 needs their head examining, but most folk just want a cheap n cheerful PC for web/games/music......

Which take price into account, so they must believe it is worth the money. You said "their [Which's] current recommendation" was the Acer, so just pointing out they in fact they had 7 best buys, and the Mac was number 1, rated higher than the other 6 PCs.

PC users should consider a Mac when getting a new computer. Few people who get one go back to PCs voluntarily.
