Just had the tee closure email from my club for December and there is not a single competion at the weekends during the whole month. I appreciate that it is winter and the competitions are far fewer but nothing for a whole month. I am not even looking for medals and such like but at my old club there was some form of social comp every day between Xmas and new year at least from the Turkey Trot the week before to Texas Scrambles, 3 club challenges etc over the festive period that were a bit of fun and an excuse to get people up the club for a drink.

Is this a common thing or am I expecting too much to have a few organised events to break up the seasonal festivities.

varies,
my home club has a greensomes knockout over the winter - no medal/stablefords or anything else.
my away club has a 'winter' medal and a stableford each month Oct-Mar before the season gets going again.

Sounds lazy Greg, we still have the turkeys and start of the winter league to go this month and our course gets rather wet in the lower parts.

Our course gets a big soggy but the pro has put on fun events every Saturday since the end of the season proper and certainly does so up to Christmas. The list is rammed for as long as there are daylight hours.

Its amazing how many clubs just shut down there comps for winter.
Of course a lot of parkland courses just get to wet and hardly playable.
But links courses are much drier and easily playable,i suppose it comes down to
supply and demand also. many, many golfers just shut down for the whole winter
and only pick the clubs up when it becomes warm and sunny again.

We have a couple of Bird and Bottles and a pre Xmas Dinner Texas Scramble in December, and the Sunday Scrubbers have two fun events. Then in Jan and Feb one Singles Stab and one Four Ball. Plus the Winter Leaguers are out and about and the usual roll ups take place. Just about enough. I agree with the OP that nothing at all in December is pretty lazy.

Having played Belton a few times this year, it seems to be a well draining course that would be good to play in the winter. It appeared extremely fuddy duddy to me though.

We have our usual Tuesday (Ladies) and Wednesay (Mens) comps despite not being fully open. In fact we won yesterday's scramble :-)

Most weekends have at least one comp too. Mixed comps this weekend - individual stableford Sat and 4BBB Sun. Next weekend has the same but other way round. Weekend after that has similar with an AmAm on the Sun...or maybe it's a scramble.

In short - lots of comps! The club does focus on that and sells itself on the volume of comps - not great for a social golfer trying to get a tee time though.

Its a reason I moved club from Kenilworth as most of you know, however, I just received our monthly newsletter email from the club I moved to who said to me that they had qualifiers all year except December as that month is more social with 3-clubs, Turkey Trots etc which I had no problem with, but, in this newsletter it now states we have no more qualifiers until April?

I now feel cheated as I strongly advised them in my interview and throughout the summer that the reason I was moving/moved was to be able to play in qualifiers through the winter, after-all, its a heathland course so why not?

I'm really disillusioned with the "club" side of things within golf at present and its seriously making me think about being a Nomad next year!

No qualifiers until March but have a few xmas social comps and New year comps in Jan and Feb

Qualifying comps in jan and feb are a bit of a lottery at most clubs

No qualifiers at ours from Oct-Apr but there's a comp each Saturday bar 1 each month.

Singles and BB comps for the Christmas hampers, yellowball, scramble, am/am, 3 club, and others I can't remember.

You're in Lincolnshire, not the north pole.
Go and speak to someone on the committee and get something organised for the winter.
Maybe the pro could help?

I just looked at Novembers diary Greg and you only had 1 gents comp and that was on a Sunday, nothing on any Saturdays all of November, what's that all about, is it a seniors & ladies club entertaining 5-day membership more than 7-day members who can only get to the club on weekends?

We have team comps and pro's roll up comps each week through Oct-Dec. problem is that you have to be quick off the mark to get your name down as the sheet fills in no time at all. There is not enough light in the day for all those wanting to play!!!

Ironically IMO we don't have as many qualifiers as we should through the Summer!!! I can go 2/3 weeks without playing one and only manage 15 this year.

November was not that bad, had a few more comps but did not close the tees for them so you turned up at any time. I am not even looking for qualifying comps but a few fun events in formats that are rarely played in the summer.
