I have just returned from 10 days at La Manga. What used to be the best Golf Resort in Europe, where I have been 6 or 7 times, is now, in my opinion, nothing but a rip off!
The electric trolleys at €19.00 are the same ones I had 8 years ago and you are lucky to get one that goes straight and has any straps to secure your bag (take your own bungees if you go). The ride on buggy at €51.00 is ludicrous.
The rules you are sent re dress code, handicap certs etc. are not enforced.
I sent the following to the Director of Golf, a Pedro Batista, so far I have had a reply that is waffle and does not address my concerns:
"I played with my partner on the South Course on Saturday 11 June my tee time was 0921 but we got off a couple of minutes early because a party of 7 golfers staying at Las Lomas were delayed so we followed behind a four ball who I guess had a tee time of about 0905?
The round took 5 hours 10 minutes, this is ridiculous there was no sign of a ranger to speed up the rate of play.
The group had no idea of golf etiquette.
The group certainly could not play to any reasonable handicap. (My partner played off 30 and these men could not even reach the distance she was driving with their second shots!).
They did not rake bunkers which they were constantly in.
They flouted the dress code which stated that cargo type 3/4 shorts are not allowed.
The rules you sent me say that a handicap certificate must be produced to play the South Course, this did not happen.
The group who were behind us (the delayed Las Lomas party) had to walk off at the 15th hole (as they were booked on the West course at 3.00pm) because of the slow play.
I went into the Administration centre after the round to complain to be told that they could not do anything but my concerns would be passed on to you.
I went into the Administration centre on Monday the 13 June to check in for our game on the North Course at 0845. I again mentioned the above complaint to be told again that they could nothing without your authority but you were not available.
On completion of this round I again went into the office to be told you were not available but that if I left my telephone number you would ring me. You have not rung me.
This is an appalling way to treat your customers who are paying a lot of money to stay and play at La Manga."
The positive is that all 3 Courses were in good condition and the weather was perfect.
My advice is to consider the alternatives in Murcia and follow the Nicklaus trail.
