so had a flight today for Brussels, 06:40 from Heathrow T5. M4 was busy, car park and pod was busy, security busy. Got to the scanner at 06:06 and was denied access, missed the cut off by 1 minute.

Knob of the day goes to me!!

Only cost me £350 for the flight, £56 for the unused hire car in Brussels and £34 for under 1 hours parking at Heathrow business.

At least you admit it and didn't allow enough time, I've watched the odd programme, briefly, when people turn up well late and kick off because they can still see the plane on the runway!

I always allow loads of extra time rather than rush due to unforeseen delays en route.

I know a minute sounds harsh, but if you start allowing variables where does it stop, 1 min, 5mins?

10 or so years ago I was in Lille on a romantic weekend with the girlfriend, now wife. We arrived via Eurostar and spent a great couple of days there. Checked out the hotel only to find the return ticket was for 24hrs later! I was in charge of bookings thus I dropped the ball big time. Spend four hours searching Lille for another hotel, walking around with bags in hand....eventually managed to find one in the early evening.

it was my mistake, however everything went against me this morning, only little bits, but hey that's life. where i fly so often, i want to spend as little time in the airport as possible, normally i have time to grab a coffee and thats about it!

Flight time was slightly earlier than i normally get, so quite simply didnt leave the house early enough. Thought 5AM would get me in the terminal for before 6, it didnt.

I did ask for some lenience, but you are right, where does it stop? I could have easily got there knowing the layout, the gate locations, no hold luggage and a solo traveler, but it fell on deaf ears so i didn't push it or kick off. Now to try and recoup some refunds if possible!

A few years ago I was invited to present the trophies on finals day of a regional junior league that I had helped to start 25 years previously.
Traveled down from Scotland to Surrey and arrived at club......thought.......that's funny the car park is pretty empty.
The finals were the next day.

Taxi driver friend of mine was arguing on his mobile with a customer who was adamant that she'd landed at the airport and couldn't see any sign of him. He was adamant that he was waiting outside and that she was no-where to be seen.

Took about 5 minutes of going back and fro like that till she mentioned she was going inside to wait as it had started raining heavily.

Taxi driver mate thought Rain?? Lovely here?? Only then did the penny drop that he was stood outside Manchester airport and she was in Liverpool.

Th'idiot.

I used to fly up and down from London every week for work. The one flight I missed back up on a Friday evening was also the time I got to the airport with the most time to spare, almost three hours before my flight!

It's quite pleasant in that Gatwick BA lounge..... :o

Was it a flight for work or weekend away?

On holiday a few years ago with a group of mates, various people were arriving and leaving on different flights.

i left the hotel, taxi to the airport, couldn't see my flight back to Gatwick on the departures board, very confused.

eventually realised that I had misread the departure time from Lanzarote as the arrival time at LGW, and that my flight was already somewhere over northern Spain.

had to be in work the next morning, so had to buy a new flight, could only get back to Luton so it eventually cost me more in extra flights and taxi LTN-LGW to collect the car than I had paid for the 2 week holiday in the first place.

strangely this episode gets brought up on a fairly regular basis by my group of **** taking mates.......

Popped over to Gibraltar from Spain and bought a couple of litre bottles of Bombay Sapphire (about £7 each) which fitted perfectly into a small rucksack I was using on holiday. Went back to accommodation, stuck rucksack in the corner for a few days. Home time comes, pack up, travel to airport, check in bags, go to security and I spy a table next to the gate with an array of discarded plastic bottled water etc.......DOH!!!

..... the rucksack was of course still on my back.....utter knob. Couldn't bring myself to stick the gin on the table, went back down and checked in an extra bag for 25 quid and successfully got the bag home with my two "bargain" bottles I could have got in Morrisons for the same money!

flights from Inversneck are a joy... i reg fly to Gatwick, Manchester and some of the islands.

I usually turn up 5 mins before the fight boarding time and if there is a queue at security, i just flash my HIAL security pass and go to the front;)

every where else i make sure i'm there an hour before.

A couple of year ago the missus had some additional holidays to waste from work so was at her parents in Slovakia, I said I'd head through on the Saturday after watching the match - skinfull of beer and I made the train ok, I can't remember leaving Czech Republic as I fell asleep - also can't remember anything else until the conductor woke me up in Budapest - I'd slept through the whole of Slovakia!! Load of missed calls on my phone from the missus as she saw me asleep in my seat from outside the train just as it pulled away

I always get there well in advance, and just power the laptop up and work. Doesn't work when you fall asleep and wake up to see the plane just leaving the runway - I have knobbed too!

Not so much my knobness, it was close though, enjoying a really nice pizza in Brussels airport, when my name got called, why is it the gate you want is always the one furthest from security.

Anyway, while waiting in the queue to get my bag checked a lady in a very smart business suit was tutting at how long the security team was taking over some others ahead, the line moved she went one way I went the other, I cleared no issues, but on the hand held metal detector, she bleeped like mad, there was a bit of fuss and another guard came over, more beeping, so a female guard came over for the pat down, nothing found, metal detector again and more beeping, the beeping got narrowed down to her crotch, she was then heard to say I have intimate piercings :o She went the reddest I've ever seen anyone go.

A few years ago we flew up to see some customers in Glasgow. After the meeting they were going to drop us off at the airport but insisted on driving by intoxicated and parkhead. Then proceeded to get stuck in traffic and when arriving at the airport behind a school trip. Missed flight. Our 99p flights now cost £80 each. Then having a beer nearly missed the next one!

Last year i booked a 4 day holiday, only to discover I had entered the next month in the return box . Luckily i had sent my flight details to my daughter who spotted the mistake. Cost me £10 to change.

Travelling to Montpelliar we fly to Paris make our way to Gare du Nord for the TGV all in plenty of time check the board find the platform sit nicely in reserved seats then 5 mins before due departure decide it's really quiet! We are the only ones on the train..... Other than the cleaners! The train had arrived from Montpelliar and wasn't going anywhere near soon!

The place I worked for had booked an engineer on a flight to Budapest, cue the engineer ringing to ask why the ship's agent wasnt there to pick him up.......service manager said he was..........outside the airport in Bucharest.

A mate of mine couldnt get on the flight to Istanbul in 2005 as his passport was out of date. Ouch.

Nearly missed my coach from Turin city centre out to the footy ground when Liverpool were there, as three of us got nearly paralytic in a pizza parlour (only ones serving ale). Just got on the last coach in time. Turin at 6.00 pm was not the most welcoming place to be at the time.
