There was a post about a muni somewhere and it got me thinking about where I started playing and learned about this wonderful game. Tried to find pictures and there are some online but over 40 years of growth has changed it a tad.

I did find this local review about it which shows it hasn't changed in 40 years.

Knightswood Golf Club

Situated in the heart of the City of Glasgow, this course is not for the feint of heart.

If your playing this course in dry weather, it's best to keep moving. Try not to stand still for too long as the danger of being struck by a glass projectile increases.

Never leave your property unattended and play the course in large groups.

Inspector Brown of Partick Police Office, recommends playing in at least an eight ball, only before lunch and only with old or borrowed clubs for your own safety.

The signature hole at Knightswood is most definitely the 5th, which is coincidentally where they recovered Inspector Browns stolen Police Car.

Ahhh those were the days..........

Used to play here regularly as well. Was a challenge trying to play whilst getting shot at with air rifles from the local neds on the second and third. Worst thing that happened to me was being "asked" if chief ned could get to hit a shot with my driver, with no option but to give it to him he proceeded to snap the damned thing over his leg proclaiming "I don't use any of that poofy modern gear"

Strange to think I have never played it since :(

Edited to add this magic review

You know how golf clubs tend to be a little on the snooty side, immaculately presented and governed by a host of strict house rules?

Well imagine a club that was the complete opposite of that. Take away the club house itself. Now add broken Buckfast bottles and cart in a load of crushed Tennent's Super cans. Congratulations, you have just imagined Knightswood Golf Course.

While the cheap local resource is fine for non-golfers like me to batter a few balls about the nine holes on offer, if you are in anyway a serious golfer just part with the extra cash to play at a top notch course.

Somehow hitting a hole in one feels slightly less impressive when the players behind you are swigging MD2020 and calling you a "banger" as you line your shot up.

Does it have a waiting list ?

Joining fee ?

Jacket and tie required for the interview ?

yup, was a lesson in life- I played it quite a lot, even won a council trophy there. I did remember being amazed at how fast I could run sometimes while carrying a set of clubs:rofl:

I played that course a couple of times when I was at Uni in Glasgow. One time this little kid, could only have been about 7, came running out of no-where carrying an egg box. Being the dumb islander that I was I told him "I don't want any eggs" to which he replied "They're no f***in' eggs, they're f***in' golf baws!" I didn't buy any and he ran off again.

Is that it in the photograph?

Certainly seems an interesting place!

Even puts the Pilton Estate kids on the last couple of holes of Silverknowes to shame! I once had a 9 or 10yo boy threaten me with a (small) knife on the 'booss' back into Edinburgh. I quietly explained it was no match for a full set of Golf Clubs!

Reminds me of Van Courtlandt Golf Club in the Bronx that Charles Slack has a chapter on in his excellent book Blue Fairways,
That place aint for the faint hearted!.

I think I had a lucky escape!
I used to play there from time to time when visiting my dear old grandmother (RIP). Never had any trouble at all, even played it by myself on occasions.
Perhaps my golf face  scared off said neds.

P.s. The queue was always horrendous

Where I learnt to play the game in the 80's.

queues were always horrendous, but I don't remember the local ends being that bad, however some of them used to wait down by the 8th green (par 3 with a green you couldn't see from the tee) , and nick anybody's ball that landed on the green then scarper by the time you got down there.

it was the busiest municipal course in the UK back then. It even has an official golf club attached to it IIRC.

Reminds me on Linn Park on the soothside. You didn't play the 9th/10th unless in a 4ball or carrying your 4iron i your hand as the Castlemilk boys lay in wait to "procure" new clubs.

Wasn't Knighstwood used to film the Still Game episode involving Winston and Tam playing golf, and getting challenged to a game off the local neds?

Thats the very place- thanks for posting:thup:

28 mins has a good view of the 18th and luxury clubhouse I spent many an hour in while waiting on the massive queue to go down

A lot of people don't know to wait till after the titles run to see the best part.

I'd imagine a lot of people won't understand the patter either.. ;)
